    Hello Ladies!

Am getting ready to start FIAR. Any of you used it before? I am looking for any tips, info., etc... that you might think I'd find helpful.

It's totally out of my element and comfort zone to start something new without completing another thing first. But, we've found that while A Beka math and phonics are great for Marlie academically, we need to use something along the lines of FIAR and other unit studies to go with her right brained style of learning and to keep her interested! So, I'm taking the incredible uncomfortable leap and setting the other A Beka subjects aside to see what she thinks of FIAR! Pray for us!

Hi, I have just orderd FIAR. I have a long wait though
:( thats what I get for living on an island I guess lol. I've been told 2-3 weeks before the suplier gets more volume 1 manuels.

 thats funny, I'm buying FIAR because it's right in my comfort zone. While Abeka would be right out of it!

I guess you have the FIAR message boards? There are also a number of sites on rowing and making lap books to go with it. If your dd is at all creative she would probably love lap booking.

hehe just had a thought if your not 'into' FIAR you may not know the term 'rowing'. Thats what they call doing the book for 5 days in a row as. Your rowing a book, not row row your boat sites.

    Hey Jo!

Thanks for the info. Marlie is VERY creative, most of the reason we are giving up some of the A Beka stuff! Too much book work.

I would love to know more about the lap booking!

    Thanks!

P.S. We're starting FIAR today, hope all goes well!

    Hi Angie,
I think Marlie will love lap booking. It's a creative way to show what you have learnt. If your not very creative yourself it might take awhile to get your head around some of the folds etc, but I'm sure you'l learn! :)

To make a lap book you use a piece of light card,( not sure what you call it over there.) or a file folder that you open out flat so you have a left and right flap. You then fold the flaps in half towards the spine of the folder. I prefere to use card myself as I don't get that spine at the back. You then get creative! :D inside your file folder you glue small minature books, there are sites and books out on the various folds which can be fancy or as simply as a few pages stapled together.
You can add maps, photos, small file folder games etc.

Heres some photos to give you a better idea

karen you might want to start a new thread for that.
Basicly MUS is mastery, you keep at a concept till it is learnd. Saxon is spiral so they jump around diffrent concepts more. I think saxon would suit kids who are good at maths who need more variety. This is what I have read anyhow, that it is spiral.

edited because its Saxon not Sazon

    Hey Jo!

Just started our second book of Volume 2 today! Thanks for asking. I do like it. So far, Marlie seems to be enjoying it too.

Last week we made a traditional Jewish dish, one of the seder supper (Passover) dishes and leavened and unleavened bread (matzoh). The book had a Jewish theme, obviously. That part of it was really fun! Did you order the cookbook and bible supplement? I would recommend it if you can afford them. They just bring those extra elements into the week.

Let me know how it goes when you start! Again, thanks again for thinking of us!

P.S. I love the idea of lapbooking! It seems quite time consuming, though, so I think I'll wait a little while until Marlie can do a little more of it on her own. Right now I am just keeping a notebook of her artwork, printouts of the stuff we've learned in our encyclopedia program, etc... She seems satisfied with that for now and is loving showing it off!

Thats great Angie! :) I ordered the Character sup but not the cookbook. Sounds like I should have!

What made you start at volume two instead of volume one?

Lapbooking can be time consuming, it depends on how you do it. I know some people can put one together in a day. I'm guessing there pretty simple ones. Like anything it can be as simple or complex as you like. But notebooking is great too, most lapbookers notebook as well. :)

Please don't send any tomatoes my way, but I REALLY DON'T LIKE FIAR! I borrowed a copy from the library because everyone says how good it is, and I HATED it! However, I DO like lapbooking! So I'm not all that bad!!! If you ever get a chance, take Tammy Dubin's workshop on lapbooking. She does a Vendor Workshop at homeschool conferences, and boy does she get you excited about lapbooking!!!

And just to let you know, my friend is starting to homeschool her son in K this year. I suggested that she check out FIAR from the library, because EVERYONE (but me!!!) thinks its great. So I'm not AGAINST it, just against it for me, LOL!

Jackie, isn't that the BEAUTY of homeschooling! ;) No offense taken!

Jo, decided on Volume 2 because it has so many of the classics. When we are finished with it we will probably start on Volume 1. Or, may even order Volume 1 soon and skip around. As long as I'm out of my comfort zone, I may as well jump in with both feet, right?
