This year we went hodge-podge on the math curriculum and worked on basic math skills, money and telling time. Our result is she can now DO the skills but her comprehension isn't there.

For example, she can count by 5s to 100. But she can't count PAST 100 by 5s. We've gone over and over that it's the same as counting up to 100 except you just say "one hundred an ___" in front of it. And that counting by 5s is adding 5 each time. Still, no comprehension.'

Any suggestions to curriculum that would help with that? She's going into "3rd grade."

wow, I would just not worry about it and conitinue on and see what happens.. I think that she would do good with Horizon but that is my fav because it reminds you of things as it goes through new steps as well, so she would get the reminder she needs?

    Hi
I'm glad you asked that question because I'm in the same boat. For the past two years I've been doing hodge podge math with my son (also going into the 3rd grade). We've been working out of three different math workbooks and internet printouts along with some educational games. I'm thinking about ordering Singapore Math for later this year.

    Good luck!

I'd recommend you go to homeschoolreviews.com and read, and if you can get to a curriculum fair and browse, or ask to look at other homeschooler curriculum, you will get a good idea for what is out there, what fits your style, what fits your child's style, and how much things cost etc. Math is one of the areas that makes me nervous. I feel the need for the structured curriculum just to make sure I'm covering all the bases before they get into things like Algebra. Other areas like social studies or science... as long as they are getting something I know they can pick up other bits later on.

Have you used manipulatives? What is her learning style?

For the counting by 5s example you used, have you tried having her count by 5s starting on a number not divisible by 5s? So, start on 3 and count by 5s: 3, 8, 13, 18, 23...

    Use a timeline.

Math-U-See has been fantastic here. It focuses on mastering the CONCEPT of each basic thing before moving on to the next. If she doesn't understand skip counting as adding, how can she understand adding? And if she doesn't understand adding, she won't understand multiplication... and then she'll be in trouble when she gets to the higher maths like algebra.

I have visual learners mostly, and my middle son is very hands-on (kinesthetic). We've been very pleased with MUS - the videos for the teacher are perfect, and usually my oldest doesn't need instruction from me after we watch the video together. And if a concept is difficult, we get to play with blocks until he gets it - THE CONCEPT, not the rote operations. It's important to us.

That's our experience. :D Hope you find what works!

My sister used Rod and Staff Math because she said the Blacklines (worksheets) reinforced the lessons. She says it works well in covering math facts. She used Math U See and felt the blocks became a crutch more than a help.

I considered getting it but I already order Horizons Math for this year. I think if Horizons does not work out, we will be switching to Rod and Staff.
