I am so happy so many are helping you out. Not sure I can add anything to what has already been stated. However, I can add my support for you. The only 5th grade material I have is a Bob Jones Heritage History book. If you want it..it's yours...just PM me. I just got rid of all my other stuff. I am sorry I did now.

Try Softschools-they have a bunch of free printables. I'm so sorry about your situation but your son is lucky to have a mom like you!

(((HUGS))) I'm so sorry you and your son had to go through that! The hug is for both of you!! I'm sure he will be much happier at home!!!!
My ds is in 3rd gr so I don't have any curriculum that will help. Do you need any supplies like paper, notebooks, pencils, pens, etc.... If you do let us know. We may be able to help some that way too!

You all are so wonderful. I am a bit calmer today. I feel foolish that I didn't include his grade. Yes it is 5th. The school tried to hold him in 4th. I thought the principle was working with me, she waited till the last minute to drop the bomb. Little did she know that I planned to homeschool if she tried doing the same things to him.

This site has been so helpful!

He loves science and is finally understanding math. I have two sets of multiplication flash cards that I picked up at yard sales this weekend. Between the two I should have one full set at least. I really need to work on his reading. His comprehension is fantastic verbally. Thought I would try to make a game of his coming up with a word and us working on the spelling and definition. He responds so well to loving gestures as his reward. Hugs are dynamite, mostly because I get them as well, lol.

I can't wait to go through the sites you listed for me. I will write to the organization today that provides free curriculum, thank you for that. Please send me a message if you have any items for 5th grade. I have plenty of pencils and a few used notebooks with paper left. Just need to stock up on printer ink. I will figure out how to get the shipping money together.

Again thanks for all your help.

This might be too late, but we're going through Connections Academy (an online virtual school) and we really like it so far. All of the materials are free, as well as a free desktop computer, and internet subsidies for those who qualify!

We are looking forward to using it because we feel like it's a "best of both worlds" situation. You have the guidance of a certified teacher, lesson plans detailing what needs to be done each week, etc., and still have the many perks of being at home!

    Good luck!

Uh, yeah - thats ILLEGAL. Straightup. I know it doesn't really help - but you should know that. I spent quite a bit of time last year dealing with educational law and compulsory education because my children were having behavioral problems. I'm not just saying it.

That aside - because I'm sure you don't want to fight that uphill battle - just want to know you've been wronged. It will be better - and although hard - anything you decide to do - you'll be able to do. Lots of people on here will help!

Not sure if you want to know this either - but once I adressed their school issues my 2 boys were so much happier. They trusted that we would stand up for them, that we trust and love them, and that their happiness was important. My son (7-got suspended for a misunderstanding) said, "Mom, know what? You and Dad love me no matter what."

Wish I could send a hug - and more support. You're not the only one, its not right, and hope your family betters from this. Love for you.

OH. MY. Gosh. What a horror story! I am *so angry* and fuming FOR you! How awful! And I suspect that the pp is correct - there's no way that what was done was acceptable. Maybe there is a way to leave an anonymous tip with the educational police? Who's that - the NEA? Someone should stop this crazy woman!! OH MY! I'm sure she's done it before and it's likely she'll do it again - it's discriminitory, derrogatory, degrading, and just plain CRAZY.

    *off podium*

Yes, do write to the Book Samaritan. They are fantastic.

Our first year homeschooling, I posted to our local Freecycle and asked for materials. I received plenty, and it carried us quite far through the first 2-3 years. (We're just beginning our 4th year, and I think this is the first year that we've had to buy things for EVERY subject for my oldest.) I didn't know about CraigsList at that time; there is a free section on that local site as well.

Best wishes, and do stick around! This is a fantastic and helpful community of homeschooling parents! :D Glad to have you!

I can post links because I haven't been on the site long enough, but here are 2 sites that are reading related .

bookadventure.org (after reading a book, he takes an onlnine comprehension test and scores points towards rewards - most popular books are there)

freerice.org - has vocab and a variety of other practice quizzes - you earn rice for 3rd world countries with every correct answer

Also, order a Rainbow Resource Catalog. I read mine from cover to cover and check my library for interesting items. Art Fraud Detective was one I found through them.
