Is this weird... IF our son would have attended public school...today would have been his first day of kindergarten. I'm not sad about the NOT being there thing, we're excited to start hs, I just have this weird feeling about "what if I had to send him today":( I'm just relieved that all has worked out. I wanted to homeschool since he was 3, but it took a few months to get dh on board, ultimately he left it up to me, but I wanted him to understand the reasoning...and he finally did. I guess today just marks a day that was avoided on the calendar. ;)

Aww. Makes me think back to the day I had to leave my little one at the school. Would have been nice to have known we could homeschool then!

Congrats on figuring out what you wanted to do at 3 years old! I didn't figure it out till 5 months into K with my daughter. Now in the 4th grade she refers to her charter & ps K year as "the days that haunt her". She said these exact words in 1st grade. That sure made me feel great!

Not weird at all! We've homeschooled for 4 years and have lived on the same street as an elementary school for 2 years (we can hear the hourly bells ring-that's how close) so it's still weird if my son and our dogs take a walk and the kids are out for recess....I'm sure there's a part of my son that wishes he was there (EVEN THOUGH he was bullied and teased a lot in ps) and sometimes for a brief moment I feel it too.

BUT...then we get back home and have FREEDOM! Freedom to learn how, when and where we want, freedom to sleep late if we have to, freedom from bullying, freedom from the mediocrity of ps....

    :)

Congratulations on beginning to home school. It is a wonderful life and adventure. I have been at it for over 16 years and still love it. :)

Also had that weird day - we were driving at the same EXACT time we would have been driving to school....but we weren't going to school. And i looked up and thought, at this point today they'd be eating lunch at school, and at this point I'd be getting one for therapy....

It was unnerving. But neat too.

I have mixed feelings too. My grandson starts K tomorrow in public school and Babyboy starts preschool at a local church on Thurs. It is hard feeling excited for them and so glad my girls are home with us at the same time.

I know how you feel. I planned on homeschooling in the upper grades, but it didn't work out that way. My son enjoyed school the year before (K), and was excited about 1st grade, until the teacher made him feel very uncomfortable/afraid. I wound up having to pull him out of 1st grade due to health concerns (teacher couldn't handle food allergies), and everytime the school bus drove by our house that year, I got a sad feeling in my stomach. I was thinking, "my son should be getting off of that bus right now". I loved waiting outside on the driveway for him to get off the bus. It was so cute since he was so young (and tiny for his age).

By the next year (2nd grade), if I ever had to wake up really early, I was thinking, "boy am I glad I don't have to do this everyday!" Now he is in the 3rd grade, and I also homeschool my younger children. The bus just drove by (it's the second day of school here), and I wondered "what if?" but I was not sad. So anyway, you eventually get over it. Especially if you have curricula that you really enjoy, and don't like waking up at 6am.

I find it often so hard at the begining of the school years, especially the first few years. (((hugs)))

I felt a little wierd to be missing the first day of school milestone, especially with my oldest. Even though I was happy to be homeschooling there was a part of me that was sad to miss that big first day of school. Now with my younger I am not so much missing that as being astonished that he is 5 already and could be going out to school this year. Of course we waited until 6 to start older DS in kinder work so ...

My youngest would've started school this year. She's 5 (6 in October). I can't imagine sending her off. I too wish I would've known about homeschooling when my 3 older started school. Would've save me a lot of tears!!! I still remember leaving my oldest alone at his table.. He was so small.. I cried all day long. It was awful.

AngeC hit it right on the head - the first day of school is such a milestone. I've had friends posting pics of their kids first day of school on Facebook and I keep thinking I should post something...but we've been schooling thru the summer, LOL. Maybe I'll sneak in on Monday when the PS students go back to school and take pics of my kids sleeping and post those. XD

I decided to HS my oldest when she was 3 or 4, and I got all choky and "what am I doing?!" freaked out on the first day. My 2nd child hit kindergarten last year and the panic was definitely decreased. So, normal but thankfully the first is (in my exp) the worst. (DD is in 3rd grade now, so that's what, 4 first days? LOL)
