So we picked a freezer up off of craigslist from a lady who said that her kids unplugged it and she didn't realize until it was too late. So we agreed to pick it up and clean it out. It was only a 6 months old but she said she couldn't stomach it. So today after two days in the sun. It got cleaned out by DH. Now we can't get the smell to go away. There was a turkey in it. The horrors....oh the horrors....

The fridge is now clean and air drying. We're going to throw some baking soda in it and hope for the best....

Agreed. When we sold our house and moved into a motorhome, we let my inlaws use our freezer. I thought they were using it. No. They let it sit out in the garage with small traces of food in it (nothing big, just the general meat leaks) for a year, unplugged. When we got it back, I almost died from the smell; I let my husband handle it.

I was just going to suggest vinegar. Spray the whole thing down with vinegar and let it dry, then spray again and let dry, then wipe clean with whatever you like and let it air dry. That may get out the smell.

Do you have any odoban? I would spray it heavy and let it air out. I hope it smells better soon! If you can get rid of the smell it should be a great deal!:)

I had that a couple years ago. We were out of town working for the winter and when we came home the refrigerator had been off and the ice cream melted everywhere and all the food bad. Their had been a storm and a breaker was kicked out about 4 months prior. It smelled like something died in our house. I used lots of baking soda and washed out with a vinegar mixture and dawn dish soap. It helped but basically it took time. After about 3 months it was better. I feel your pain - good luck.

We used some bleach water to kill any of the mold that was growing (DH's words not mine, I wasn't daring enough to look in...lol.) Then we let it air dry and I put a box of baking soda in it. We will do the vinegar wash down if the smell doesn't go away. Our trash is out at the curb already and trash day isn't until Tuesday.... I joked earlier that we won't have to worry about anyone breaking into our house because they will have to walk past the trash can and that would deter anyone.....lol.

Sitting outside has helped alot. DH said he will give it a proper 2nd scrub down this weekend and then plug it in. We have a stand up freeze so we are desperate to use this one yet. But we like to stock up over the winter, when we get tax return we usually go and spend about $500 on meat and stuff so we don't have to worry about it. Also we cook alot of big meals and freeze them into small servings for DH's lunch.

I was going to suggest vinegar as well. Put a couple of dishes of white vinegar in and they should absorb the odors.

We let it sit out all night with the lid open, It seemed to do most of the trick.

I told dh I don't care if it is a free working freezer or fridge just pass it up...lol.

I would plug it in and make sure it works before buying any food to put in it.

Maybe try putting a few charcol brickets in a net bag? I read somewhere that helps with smells!
