I've commented before about how DS2 is a little "behind" where I'm sure he'd be with reading if he were still in school. My goal with him has been to move along at his pace, instead of shoving him through phonics, etc. like they did to DS1 in the private school he attended. (Doing so just caused SO many problems, including a kid who could read OK, but despised it until very recently.) Anyway, up until now, reading time was always me reading to DS2 or him reading to me. He never asked to read a book by himself before. I had an appointment this afternoon, so I told him we'd have to wait and do reading when I got home. He's like, "No, I want to read to myself today." When I asked him what, he showed me one of the readers we'd read a few weeks ago. I said that would be fine. Well, he ended up taking it into the bathroom with him (typical man, huh? LOL). When I went into the bathroom later on, I saw a stack of three books on the counter. when I asked if he'd read those, too, he said "Yeah. I read all of them by myself". And when I asked a couple of quick questions about the content, he proved that he had indeed read and comprehended what he'd read. I was just so happy to see him do this for the first time! He's also been very reluctant to spell written words on his own. He loves writing little stories but always asks how to spell most of the words on the page. I've always told him to just write it the way it sounds, or if he really wanted it all to be correct (like if he were making a card for someone) I'd still say, "Sound it out and tell me what you think first," instead of just telling him. Today he sounded out and wrote the word "spider" correctly and yesterday, he wrote a short note to his Nana independently, too. I know it's small potatoes, but I'd really begun to wonder if what the seasoned HS'ers here said was true: that eventually things would begin to click, when he was ready for it. And y'all were right! It did!
Oh wow......That's so wonderful! Don't you just love those 'light bulb' moments? These are the things that make homeschooling so rewarding; that make those 'rough' days worth it. Good job and congrats. on the progress. LR
Awesome! I'm still waiting for that a-ha moment with my oldest so it is encouraging that it does come
