Ok, so around here, we aren't going to start school until January. Daddy just got home, and I want to give the kids (and me!) time to adjust. Then the holidays will start, and that is always a busy time. So we are just keeping it light, doing review and such.

Then the other day, my loving husband told me that he wants me to put together my own curriculum. We used Abeka in the past, which I love. Now, he told me that he doesn't want me to use "textbooks" at all, just what I can find on the internet. GRR. How am I supposed to even find what my ds in 1st should even know? I have K covered for my dd, but crud, now what do I do????

I hope that helps out. I am sure somewhere there is listed a free online library if not try: http://www.readprint.com

As I said, I just got this list myself...and it is quite overwhelming..so I haven't had the time to go through it all. I suppose this list could be moved over to favorite links for everyone to see in the future also. Maybe...I will post it over there also.

First...deep breath...this CAN be done. It takes some getting together, but it can be done. :D I promise.

Is your 1st grader reading? I'm assuming if you've used Abeka that they are or are very close.

If not reading - www.starfall.com is a great FREE resource to teach reading and to enhance reading skills. Just can't say enough about them. All three of my children have learned to read using starfall, and enhanced by continuing to use through first grade.

I would also recommend checking out the Sonlight core reading list that fits your children's levels (read alones/read alouds). Even if you are not teaching from a christian perspective - the read aloud/alone lists under each core give you some good living books to use for the study of history.

When my older two were first grade, I would use www.edhelper.com 's handwriting sheet generator (and now I use www.worksheetworks.com handwriting sheet generator) to create a daily journal page for them to trace. I always included the day, date, their name, their address and their phone number, then also included words they were working on for spelling or what have yous.

For spelling, I've been using www.superteacherworksheets.com for lists and worksheets. I then put the list on www.spellingcity.com to enhance the learning. They can play games, I print additional worksheets out, etc. My son just loves his spelling.

I truly think in first grade you can do it for free, or very inexpensively. The only thing I haven't covered is math...and there are a ton of free math sites out there. OR you can buy a very inexpensive workbook, etc.

    You CAN do it!!!

    Ava, wow, you totally rock!
    Krista: Thanks for the ideas.

I think my biggest issue with all of this is the fact that his mother told him that I don't need a curriculum and then he came and said something about it.
Anyway, keep the ideas coming. I'll need as many as I can. Of course, Ava may have just sent me everything on the internet :) (and I'm NOT complaining)

Hi, I'm fairly new, so can give websites in their correct form so you will have to type it in correctly. I don't have near as many as Ava Rose, but we use these and my daughter likes them. First of all worldbook dott. comm. will give you a list of everything that should be covered in each grade - that helped me out this year as we are doing all of our History through the library. Second, we found a great spelling site - it is type and spell dott. comm. by Houghton Mifflin. It offers spelling lists for all grades and has a feature that calls the words out to the child for them to type in and spell. If not correctly typed, they will give clues until correct ad then review, review, review. They list the definitions below each word as well. Spelling was a no go for us last year, but with this site, my daughter has made 3 A's in 3 weeks on her tests. YEA! We use a site for math practice, but they do other subjects as well - it is fun brain dott. comm. They use games to reinforce math, etc. My daughter is taking typing this year (I know yours is too young right now, but just for keeps) on a FREE site call typing web dott. comm. They show proper key fingering, time tests, and acuracy. If you log in, they will keep track of your progress. Thats about all for now, I hope it helps some. Good luck.

Ooops I forgot, I just found a great free bible curriculum site - it is children dot calvary chapel dott. comm. It has a coloring sheet, word search, crossword, and 2 pages of fill in the blank/circle correct word, true/false, etc. type questions. The 2 pages come in an easy version and a harder version for different ages. This may be too old for 1st grade, except the coloring sheet.

I have lists of lesson plans that I used with my younger kids (I always made my own curriculum that did not rely on textbooks) at my familyd website listed below. Feel free to see if any of them work for you.

You guys are so amazing! Our only other choice right now is to send him to public school because of money. I hate money! But I hate public school more!

This year I am using most of the Old fashioned Education books for my ds who is in first. They really seem to be working well-he is finally learning to read using the McGuffy Readers, Word Mastery Phonics, and Dick and Jane books. Also check your library for lots of living books for history adn science.

At the Homeschooling.About.com site, there's a list of the World Book "typical course of study", which lists what's usually taught at each grade level. It's just a general guideline, but at the About site, there are some links to resources for some of the items in the WB "curriculum". I don't know if any of them are "above and beyond" what Ava Rose has listed here already, but just in case........
