Hi I am new to the forum but not home schooling. I have home schooled for 9 years now. I have done my own curriculum and used K12. Tried Connections and am trying isucceed now. My question is what are you doing about a diploma for your kids that graduate form home school? My dd is a senior this year. Thanks for any response. Paula
well, here in IL, we are considered a private school, so i will prob order blank ones and issue them from "our" school. MTS Academy, lol. If we for some reason enroll in an accredited school in high school, then we will get the diploma from them. are you considered a private school??
No but we are not regulated much at all. We are not required to do much except teach core subjects and notify the school district that we home school.
I was going to mention the HSLDA, I don't think you have to be a member to get it. Now I could be wrong. Also welcome to homeschool spot!
I was going to just print it out, and in fact may do that as well as DD is still doing some homeschooling next year too.. even though her required stuff is goign to be done and she is having a graduation from our church's High school this year. She has homeschooled all the way up to this year. She wanted a ceremony and thats the real reason she wanted to go out, but I have seen with the way ours is done its good for her,( her teacher homeschooled his own kids and runs the hs that way, so thats cool!) Anyway, our school is a private school like someone else said so we are making our own. Thats what I did for K and 6th grade as well. there are tons of places online that will give you a professional looking diploma.
I was surprised how many people in AK use Connections. Charter schools are really big here. Somebody found an industry.
That is what I was going to do too. I have had a teacher tell me that here ( Idaho) they would have to have a GED to show. But I don't think that is true. But then that is what I am trying to find out also. I have not been able to find anything that says for sure. No I am not a HSLDA member. Here in Idaho home schoolers are not required to test. So that makes me think I can print a home school diploma. Thanks for all the replies. Paula
That's absolutely NOT true!!! Whoever said that was misinformed or just plain lying, I would prefer to think the first! A GED still has the stigma of being for a kid who dropped out and went back to school. A hs'ed kid never "dropped out" or didn't "not finish" school. A hs'ed kid GRADUATED, often with a more rigorous class load than those who finished in a "traditional" school. I was at a college fair on Thursday, and was talking to them about what would be needed. Basically I was told (and most of these schools were from out of state) that the diploma issued by me would be fine, and the admissions would be willing to work with me as to what I would need.
I agree with Jackie on this. We are private school print on off. Yepper Jackie that is what I was told too. Sme one is telling someone some fairy tales.
I am not sure in Idaho but in NY homeschooled kids do not get diploma's that are recognized by the state. We can request a letter of completion from the district Superintendent but even if we print our own they are not recognized. I would think if there is no statute against it you probably can print your own.
Depends on what you mean by "recognized by the state". No, the state doesn't issue them or anything, but I'm betting that if a kid with a homeschool diploma would apply for a job or state college in New York, it would be accepted.
State Colleges will not accept a homeschool diploma in NY. Kids either need the letter of completion, GED or 24 hours of college credit. I am not sure about employers since all the homeschool kids I know have gone on to college.
So what is a "letter of completion", and where does one get it? Too bad New York wants to refuse its best and brightest....
Here's what the ISU website says about homeschool enrollment and it does look like they encourage the GED, but it isn't the only way to go. http://www.isu.edu/enroll/admissions/ged.shtml
WOW, thats the first time I saw a University that said you had to be 18... they must have the 6 yr old kindergardeners there eh?
I'll probably order some from my curriculum-provider. If you use at least half their stuff, you can order theirs and have the names put on and all that, or if you want to you can order blank ones from them and fill them in yourself. You can order nice ones from online companies like Jostens, with covers, as well as caps and gowns. Or you can get "certificate forms" with "official document"-looking borders printed in gold or colors on and print the diploma yourself. Or you can go to a custom printer's and have them make one up for you. I may just get some nice-looking paper at the stationery store and print them up myself. I have a student "graduating" eighth grade at the end of this year, who has been with me longer than any other of our 36-so-far students in the last nine years. I want to do something a little special for her, so I'll probably get her a cap (but probably not a gown) and tassel, and do a nice diploma in a cover for her. I had one other student who completed eighth grade with me after being with me from fifth through eighth, and it was rather short notice (I thought until then that he was coming back for ninth grade), so I made him a cap out of poster paper, and painted it in camouflage colors like the jacket he wore every day of his life.... and made him a tassel out of embroidery floss, and printed up a diploma on my best paper.
I see. It's probably less trouble for them if you have a GED; they can honestly say you've actually done it, and haven't been sitting home watching TV and eating bon-bons all day long. But it also clearly says you can chose not to. Seems to me that high ACT/SAT scores would prove things just as nicely to them. There's still no way I would have my child take a GED.
there is a websit called homeschooldiploma.com. From there you can order real nice diploma's and other graduation type stuff that would be pretty cool. Just an idea to help you out.
Thanks for all the replies. I figured they were wrong on the GED with Idaho being so easy to home school in. I had just planned on printing one. Who really asks you for a copy of your diploma?? I have never had anyone ask to see mine. But my dd is concerned with it. So I thought I would do some checking. thanks Paula
