    I found this and thought it would be a great birthday present for my 13yr old boy. I found it on another site with a $40 rebate.
    http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shop_ipod/family/ipod_nano?mco=Nzk2MDUyMg

    or this link and click ipod nano http://store.apple.com/us?mco=NzcwNjcyOQ

    Now this is the newer version with the camera/video camera. Can anyone tell me what they think about it.

    Now keep in mind we do not have any ipods at our house. So, I really don't know anything about them.

    Also this is what all come with

    * iPod nano
    * Earphones
    * USB 2.0 cable
    * Dock adapter
    * Quick Start guide

    I noticed it states dock adapter, do I have to buy a dock? Also what is the dock? Also I don't see anything about a charger. Do these charge from the usb cable to my computer like some of the mp3 players do? Is there anything else I need to purchase with this?

    I'm getting a page not found when I click on the link. It could be because I'm on my iPod touch this morning. The nano should come with everything you need to operate it; and yes the charger comes w/ the iPod.

    OK....The link is working. IMO....They are very durable. As a matter of fact I dropped my touch in water and thought I had killed it. I put it in a ziploc bag of rice overnight, and it worked just like new! BTW...this works for cell phones too...LOL

    FWIW....I think the Nano is a great idea for your son's b'day, especially if he enjoys listening to music.

    One thing to think about if this is the first mp3 player for you: remember with Apple, you have to pay for every song individually with iTunes. My first player was a Sansa and I used the Rhapsody service. There was a subscription you could get for $14 a month and it allowed you to download as many songs as you wanted but you could only listen to them on the mp3 player (or computer), no burning. It worked out well for me and I got songs willy nilly. Then my hubby brought me home an iPod Touch for Christmas last year and guess what? Can't use it with anything but iTunes. All those songs I had on my playlist were useless. And to make things more fun, iTunes wouldn't run the Sansa so I couldn't even give it to my son with some of my songs on it (I'm not paying for songs AND a subscription). You can, however, rip songs from cd's you own and upload them into the iPod (but you can do that with other brands as well).

    This is not to say that I don't like my iPod, I do (and it's got some nifty other functions), it's just something to think about when you are deciding because the music is an on-going cost. Services like Rhapsody and Napster will run a variety of brands, where Apple is pretty proprietary with theirs.

    All of my kids have Ipods and love them. Everything from a shuffle to the 80 gig nano. My son got his for his 13th birthday and was thrilled to death. They are very durable. My kids love iTunes because they can download the music to their Ipods and make CDs for the car or whatever. You don't have to buy music from itunes, he can download all of his current CDs to a playlist and put those on his Ipod as well. A dock isn't necessary, they charge hooked to the usb on your computer.
    One thing I would recommend is looking at the refurbished Ipods at the Apple store. I bought my oldest dd the 80 gig nano for Christmas and got a great price on a refurbished. It comes packaged like a brand new one and has a warranty as well.

    I buy almost no songs for my iPod. Our library carries CDs, and I can put them on hold county-wide and have them delivered to our local branch. So that's where I've picked up 97% of my songs.

    And by the way, I love my iPod. ;) It helps me get thru the laundry. And other monotonous daily chores.

    I'm not an apple fan, I think they are more trendy than useful. I don't like being limited to using Itunes service and personally I like mp3 players better since whatever music I download can go to almost anything my dh, I and oldest dd use our blackberry's to listen to our music a lot.

    Another plug for Sansa. My husband just got me a Sansa Fuze for my birthday and I love it. You can watch video, photos, listen to music, FM radio, audio books on it. You can even use it as a voice recorder. It doesn't have a camera though. It has a slot for a micro SD card so you can expand the memory cheaply if you ever need to. It does play a wide variety of audio files from mp3, wma, ogg to flac. That's the biggest plus over an iPod for me.

    And it's less then half the price of an iPod. When you buy an Apple you're paying a lot for the Apple name.

    But if you go for an iPod then everything you need should come with it. Docks are chargers you can buy afterwards but the iPod should come with a cord charger anyway. I suspect that's what the USB cord is for.
