I am looking for another laptop. We have one right now but I use it for personal use and school. I would like to separate the two. Especially with the kids using it. Any recommendations as to what I should get. I like the price of the netbooks but not going without a dvd slot. I definately am looking at spending less than $500.

We've had good success with Tiger Direct. Just don't accept their free offer of CSC's anti-virus program; it messes up email.

Also, I'm very impressed with netbooks - which we've bought at both Costco and Walmart. I believe you can buy an external DVD drive for them.

You can buy an external drive. They are about $90. We have a netbook and the external drive. We use the external with both the netbook and our desktop, because our desktop does not have a CD/DVD-R drive.

Check out Best Buy for "open box" deals.

I would suggest Best Buy. The have some really decent Toshiba laptops that run around 300-400. We are planning on getting one for DS13 for school work. We have separate computers but his computer is rather old. We also live in hurricane country so we would like something we can just grab and take with us if the need ever arises.

Wouldn't you know that I bring this computer in because it is giving me a hard time and it starts working right. ?????? The tech told me what to do to correct it and I take it home and it is working fine. I guess it just needed to be threatened. I am still looking for another computer. I looked online and Best Buy had some great deals.

Believe it or not, we had to purchase 3 laptops over the last year and we did the best with the one we got from Walmart. Ok..actually, we did get a better price on the one we ordered directly from HP, but that was only because my brother works there and we got a discount. But, of the other 2, the best price/deal was from Walmart. The other one came from Best Buy, but we got the same computer for less from Walmart. All 3 computers are HPs. But Walmart has many brands.

We've had a variety of laptops, and most have been just fine. I'd say the most rugged I've had are IBM Thinkpads, now built by Lenovo in China. When my screen started to go wrong within one month of the 3-year warranty ending, they replaced it within three days; I was very impressed. We've had two Gateway computers, and they've been fine. Previously, I had a Dell, and it was good too. The only problem with Dell is that their level of support has dropped over the last few years. If something goes wrong, it's really difficult to get help.

I had a Toshiba, but I found it a little bulky. I've heard that HP computers are a little ordinary, but I've never owned one. We have a couple of Acer netbooks, and they are proving to be excellent value - although the screen is going wrong on one of them after only 9 months.

Two of my boys have Apple laptops, and they absolutely love them. Apple users tend to be a breed apart.

I agree. Our oldest laptop is a dell and it has just been sitting there because it needs a new motherboard and I always get the run around from dell everytime I call. Of course they want me to send it in to them but my dh can fix it, I just want the motherboard and they say they don't have them anymore because it is too old - ugh. The one we use now is an acer and have had it for about 5 years and it has been great. I'm still shopping around. I was thinking that if I can hold off until next month I may be able to get a really good Christmas deal.

I got mine in December almost 2 years ago and it was originally over $1000 but I got it for $699 plus tax. It's been a great laptop. I really love the darn thing.
