Today my son made a book for the wildflowers we have collected and pressed. He was so excited about it. Wow! I have been avoiding lapbooking because it seems so boring. Maybe he will like it. Please tell me how it is not boring or if you think it is boring please share. I don't mind hands-on activities. I do tons of hands-on activites. But lapbooking has not been one of them. It seems to me to be as my son says "boring snoring."
LOl..I almost spit out my lunch, that was pretty funny. I never got into the lapbooking stuff, but we did make History Pockets and a similiar thing with habitats when he was in K and first, so maybe that counts. My son never minded the cutting, pasting, and coloring, but he always balked at the writing.
I don't do lapbooking either. Of course, I'm honestly not a big crafts person in general. I also don't care for things like scrapbooking. So, that's probably why I don't like it. I do like fine arts, and we do make a lot of stuff. But I just can't get into the lapbook thing. To each his or her own!
I've never done much lapbooking, but I really do like it! I don't think it's boring at all, though. I think it's much more interesting than just writing a report. Regardless, if it's something you're not interested in, then just don't do it! If your son finds it boring, it's going to be a waste of time for you.
well it can be as boring or as exciting as you want to make it. Now we did a few and the girls loved it. Like Jackie said better then a report. Make it fun. Make them find pictures of wildflower, where they grow, have a chart with several different kinds of wildflowers go for hike and mark them off as you see when you come home fill in the chart with different colors. Find out who eats off them. Like bees and they make honey with the flowers, can do a picture of bee on the flower taking it back to the hive to make honey. Just make it fun. My girls like doing lapbbooks over report any day. several fun things to do.
My girls like lapbooking. I am NOT crafty, at least not with paper, but they enjoy it, so we do it anyway. We're working on a dinosaur one right now. You could try it once, anyway, and then you'll know if your son likes it or not. You can get free templates here, for making the little books and folds and etc: http://www.homeschoolshare.com/lapbooking_resources.php
We just started History Pockets (Colonial America, Grades 4-6+) and love them! At first, they seemed too simple to be able to hold my 5th grader's interest (or more importantly...MINE! *lol*). But so far, so good! I'm glad we gave them a try and will DEFINITELY do some of the other books available. How similar/different are History Pockets to/from Lapbooking?
I made one before, I hated it. It took a long time to prepare everything. My dd could take it or leave it, so we left it. I might try one again in the future, but not make it so elaborate. I think they are a good alternative to a book report for younger kids.
to make our first one exciting we did it in a pizza box, that turned otu to be fun... we are doing the folder type wiht our co op now and its kinda fun watching them put the stuff together, I would do it much faster but in a group you have to wait for everyone. the fun part is when they get to see thier finished product and all that information is there in a cute little folder
My DS likes it and he is 9. As long as it's something he is interested in. I thought it would be boring for him but he seems to enjoy it. I let him find all the info. I cover the folders and make the pockets and pull outs for him on my Cricut. Then he types the information he wants in it. Doing it this way teaches him about report writing, doing projects and research! We just finished on on Ancient Egypt and now we are doing Cosmic Adventures ( Space in Depth)
We do notebooking instead - which can include some lapbook elements if you like, or it can be a collection of maps and timelines, or biographies, or whatever! We use some scrapbook materials to make some of our pages "pop" and we use the History Pockets too! We just started Colonial America!
Thanks for the link! There's LOTS of info on that site...I'm hoping to learn more and give it a try! gwenny99-We are doing the same History Pockets! There's a book I checked out of our library that seems to go along well with the History Pockets: "Everyday Life: Colonial Times" by Walter A. Hazen , ISBN 0-673-36322-8 It has a short chapter reading, then several worksheets/activities that follow to reinforce each chapter. It was published in 1997 but still a good resource! HTH!
You are very welcome! We've only done the first chapters of each book, but they seem to be a great compliment to one another.
I don't think it's boring, and I think it's more interesting that writing reports. My kids like it sometimes and don't like it sometimes. They need to put something to paper, though, and I figure that they'll like it more than worksheets. We may eventually move into notebooking.
