I would like to add a typing course to my 5th grade DD's curriculum. Have any of you used any programs that you would recommend? Thanks in advance!

My dd13 used Mavis Beacon when she was in 5th & 6th grade. We liked it and got it for $10 at Walmart.

We've also used Mavis Beacon, a Spongebob typing program and finally settled on some free typing lessons/games online (there's tons of them)...can't remember what it is since we don't do typing anymore.

My son seemed to enjoy typing games to learn rather than just straight typing lessons.

Thank you, Tiffany and Jane! I will definitely look into the Mavis Beacon program, and explore what the Internet has to offer.

Mario typing is fun. My kids have used it and the younger one is really pretty good at typing, he does not yet have the hands spot down, but did not use it much. I am planning that one for the second semester elective in winter/spring.

My oldest used Type To Learn 3...I know Type to Learn 4 is out too...we don't have it. We also have Mavis Beacon and SpongeBob....we haven't used them as much as the younger 2 haven't really started learning yet....but I know the SpongeBob will appeal to my son when he does.

We used the bbc one... and liked it until we were done.
    ds(12) uses Typing instructor deluxe.
He likes the games best too. but he has to do a lesson. Hee hee.
ds(9) just does the games. Which is because he is still physically too small to type well. So we are working on cursive there.
My elder son is typing really well, and usefully after a bit more than a year of curriculum.
So that is what we do.

I like Mavis Beacon too, but I found a site that my daughter is using to learn on and it is free. The site is www.typingweb.com. It teaches proper key fingering and keeps track of their progress. It shows their speed too as well as highlighting the fingers they should be using to type with on the sides of the lesson. When you sign in it will start you out from the beginning for new students and you cannot proceed to the next lesson until you get 90% accuracy (I think). It's pretty good.

Snipet: I checked the site that you recommended and it appears to me most like that way that I learned. Thanks a LOT!

I use this as a reward for my DS practicing on another keyboarding site. He willingly does the typing drills so that he can play the games. And the games reinforce his typing skills. It's a win win situation, lol.

    You're welcome nsackey.

Teachermom - you have to be online to use it (I think) we use it online. I haven't checked to see if they have a download available, however, we are on dial up and we don't have any problem with it loading or while we are using it.
