We have a tv in the family room for rented movies (netflix) but we much more enjoy our tv box :) It's a washing machine box we painted and decorated with knobs and antennae and the kids put on family shows. Kids think it's hysterical to "change" the channel while some performance is on. So we will be in the middle of a history production of King arthur and suddenly be changed to animal plant wild safari. It really is funny

we have cable now because it comes with out rent but we went 7 years without. It is definately doable, even enjoyable. I can say we spent alot more time as a family than we do now. We went from having 1 tv to 3 *gasp* because everyone has something they "need" to watch and people who are upgrading their tv to flat screens keep giving us their old ones.

Netflix has a very affordable plan and many tv series on it. That is soemthing you can look into if you are wanting something to watch. We do 1 at a time unlimiet for 8.00 and we get unlimited on demand with it too. Anything that is playign that month on starz is free on netflix

We have Cable, kind of. We got the absolute smallest package they have, the package they don't actually advertise & most people don't know it exists. It costs us $8 a month, but we only get about 16 channels, including our local channels. We got it because our local channels didn't come in clearly & we wanted to be able to watch the TV. Earlier this year, we had to buy a new TV & got a digital one. Then, when everything switched to digital, we got a few more digital channels.
The kids really only watch PBS. Dh & I have some shows we enjoy. Considering how little we pay so that we can get the channels we get, we'll keep it.
We also borrow a lot of DVDs from our library. They have a pretty decent collection of DVDs & VHS - TV shows, educational shows, kids stuff, and movies (including new releases). We've borrowed MythBusters; shows from National Geographic, the History Channel, Biography, etc; Signing Time; Magic School Bus; and more. We've caught up on TV shows we used to watch. We've done all of that without having to spend any money. We are considering getting a NetFlix account next year. That way, we don't have to wait as long to watch some things (waiting lists can be very long at our library).

We cut back to basic cable only for a while. I thought it was great at first, but my dh took to being on the internet around the clock. That was worse than us all watching TV together. I always had a rule anyway of only 1 computer and 1 tv in the house. However, dh had purchased another computer and he was on it around the clock. It was awful.

I would love to be a computer free, tv free household. I think we would be better off. But I know my dh would just take over and do what he pleased if I tried and any benefit would be ruined.

We have only the regular TV here. We watch PBS news, a show or two a week, and otherwise rent DVDs if we want to watch something. Much too busy here to turn the darn thing on.

We have a tv, but no cable, dish or antenna. We have not had it for about 18 months now. We do have dvd's and vhs, but we seldom turn it on. No one misses it here.

we have 2 tvs, no cable, satellite or dish. we are members with netflix, and we do the bigger option, so we can have 2 movies at once, one for adults and one for kids. it is $14 a month. we got rid of our satellite less for money saving and more for the filthy garbage they called commercials nonstop! i mean one night we were watching old yeller and this commercial comes on and show two girls making out in bed (nip/tuck) talk about something i dont want my kids seeing, and i wouldnt want them watching a guy/girl making out it bed either. so, we didtched it last august. we have been better for it. we watch old movies from netflix or new releases if they are decent! i can watch my two shows i have to see- grey's anatomy and private practice every week (yes i know, very stupid, but never with the kids awake) i watch them on hulu.com. if we are bored we will look up a video on you tube or something, but most of the time they are playing or learning. i will say we have a playstation 2 that they are allowed to play in bad weather or if they are just bored and i want them in. it is a good tool to take away for punishment, lol, so i keep it. if they get grounded from it for a week, you would think the sky was falling. but other than that, we have enough to do without it.

so long story short! yep, i think you will be fine without it. my dh wasnt thrilled, but we survived and we are closer for it!
