I was looking on Toysrus. They have a lot of cool science kits but, boy are they expensive. Where can I find easy , fun cheap experiements to do ?
You might also want to wait til After thanksgiving - I know a bunch will be on sale for half off on Friday. Also check places like vegsource - they might have a used one that is in good shape. Finally, just look up science experiements online (google "physical science experiments") and make your own science kits using what you have around the house and ziplock baggies. Presto - ready to go science kits! You can make several and have a few weeks worth of stuff. Good luck!
Go to Steve Spangler's site. He has tons of experiments that are cheap and fun to do. We did a mad science day at my house with our homeschool group. We made quicksand, goo, ice cream in Ziplock bags, elephant toothpaste, ziplock bombs, Mentos explosions, and tie-dye shirts with Sharpies. Lots of fun stuff to be found there, and all use stuff you either have or can get easily at most area stores pretty cheap.
go to the library, tell them what you want. Chances are they have great books and videos that will help you with science experiments using basic things at home that will be inexpensive.
730 Easy Science Experiments with Everyday Materials. This is a compilation--also look for specific topic books (ie Earth Science) with Everyday Materials. There's an older series by Reader's Digest on various titles that has some great inexpensive activities. Listings will look like How Weather Works: 100 Ways Parents and Kids Can Share the Secrets of Weather. If you have a Hobby Lobby or Border's Bookstore near, you can use their coupons, watch clearance, and bargain book sections. I just picked up some kits for 75% off at Borders and the 40% off Hobby Lobby coupons (which they often have online) can make kits more reasonable.
Hi Mommy2thegang! There was another thread on science curriculum a few weeks back that had a lot of really good ideas - you might want to search it out! I have used the "Good Science" Curriculum from ICR. It is intended for K - 3 or 4 - 6 grades, but you can stretch it either direction. It is entirely hands-on experiments with equipment you have right in your house or that is very easily attainable. It did come with a very small kit of some wires, etc. It is no longer available, but I picked one up on eBay very reasonably priced and totally complete, including the kit! It was the best science I ever did with my kids! It came in a 3-ring binder and had a video with it. The one I picked up had a workbook, softcover bound book (instead of the 3-ring binder), the vhs tape and the little "kit". This was the K-3 edition. I also loved the science kits in a box. They come with everything you need for several experiments on a subject, like light, the solar system, rocks and minerals, etc. They are still available if you google. I found some and posted them in that other thread, if you are interested in these. They also take only household ingredients. One box takes a month or so and is only about 10 dollars.
I know one!(pick me pick me)just jokin' but really here is the link. It is great. Also you can use it as a whole curriculum and add a few books if you want. Also everything is included!!!! "How to Fossilize your Hampster"-Book www.homesciencetools.com- great website for resources needed for some experiments. We did some pretty cool ones involving growing bacteria. We are currently doing a CSI unit that is pretty fun too.
You can visit your local Barnes and Noble, and look for some science experiment books. My son found three that he really liked even though we only picked up one at the time. We are saving for the rest. The one we have is called The usborne internet linked science ecnyclopedia. The book has lots of websites in it. The website is http://www.usborne-quicklinks.com
Yeah we have several books I have picked up at yardsales... I will list them later today or tomarrow.. I'm soon going to be packing up the school shelves for our move, so I will do it then.
