IS there anything out there to use as advent type material for a Jr Higher?
I am thinking that I will get the Lego Advent for ds this year because he usually makes a lego town to go along my little Christmas town each year.
The Lego advent is going to be incentive for him to finish school during the last month before Christmas. We are going to need it, he even offered to pay half!
SO I was thinking where did the advent start, and why?
We love notebooking we add to them but if anyone has one that is at least upper elementary for me to start with that would be cool!
    Thanks!

himm, well this is all catholic version but I know that other people celebrate ti differently so if anyone else out there.. has a tradition about it that I can teach my ds about it?
I found there is a fast, "philip fast" didnt have enough information so I clicked the link and it listed the 'saints' honored by each day... not wanting to get into that, but want to knwo where else it is celebrated and why?
Anything in the renn about that?

Maybe one of these links will help?

What is Advent?- The answer to this and many other questions including, how it began and how it is celebrated.

    http://www.spirithome.com/advent.html

Prayers and Customs of Advent and Christmas- Check out this narrative about St. Nicholas for older children.

    http://www.cptryon.org/prayer/adx/adnick.html

How to Make and Use an Advent Wreath- The Advent wreath started in Germany as a Lutheran family custom. They didn't become popular in churches until the middle of the twentieth century. Now they are nearly universal.

    http://www.kencollins.com/question-10.htm

The Jesse Tree- The Jesse Tree is named from Isaiah 11:1: "A shoot will spring forth from the stump of Jesse, and a branch out of his roots." It is a vehicle to tell the Story of God in the Old Testament, and to connect the Advent Season with the faithfulness of God across 4,000 years of history.

FWIW.......The Jesse tree is new to me. I have never heard of it. Has anyone else?

This site may help you - it's from a Protestant perspective: http://www.cresourcei.org/cyadvent.html

Originally, advent was designed to help people anticipate the celebration of the coming of Christ into the world [hence the Latin "ad" - "to" and "veni" - "to come"].

As with many Christian aspects of the season, advent was co-opted by more commercial types of things and has really just come to be a way for people to celebrate the anticipation of Christmas Day.

Well, at least you have medicine to blame it on. I blame everything on the dog. I figure she gets blamed by everyone else for everything else, so I can blame her for my failing brain cells, too!

We are celebrating the Advent as Christians (We are not Catholic). We are using different resources that I posted in our plans for December that I posted in our Homeschool Blog. One that you may find interesting that I posted about is a unit study on the symbols of Christmas.

At Homeschool.com - Christmas Symbols Unit Study
There are twenty complete lessons (4 weeks on a 5-day school week schedule) on Christmas Symbols. We plan to use this for bible verse, history, activities and music. Really beautiful ideas!

If I find anything else I'll let you know. Hope this helps.

We had wanted to do the Lego Advent but the stores all got short changed in oru town... still looking but will end up ordering online I guess

We do a Jesse Tree. Each day we read a portion of the Bible that goes with a specific symbol and then hang that ornament on our tree.

I used this book, but I then took and made the ornaments with my kids out of Polymer clay instead of felt.

They LOVE it and it really ties in the Old Testament with the New Testament.

Oh, and we are not Catholic, but we love the preparation for this great time of the year. It is a way to prepare our hearts and minds.

staying -- can you type out the link using the word dot and backslash for me? I couldnto see what book it was and am interested. I am right now setting up an advent email lesson for my son each day. ITs kinda neat. I am using Colorado Mom's Calendar and the Christmas Symbols web site as well. I have him going to certain sites, reading certain things or doing the lessons. I used the Caroling thing for the second day too. He has to do one caroling item either study or it looked like there was a game or two on the list too! So the interactive thing on Colorado Moms freebie for this week is really helping!
THen with the printable calendar she gave us I am writing gift or treat then a clue as to where to find it or another clue. This is fun!
We are going to be learning as well as enjoying a fun countdown.
SHHH dont tell him it will be reading and writing !
I am having some days be he has to write about what he learned. Another day He will be explaining the scriptures for that day and how it fits into the advent theme of the week etc.
I have a lot of work to do tonight and early tomorrow am to get it set up for the first week.
Meanwhile working on Drama for the school. Whew!

Didnt read everything, but we are making THIS with the kids this year, and will hopefully have it for many years to come! We are also trying to squeeze in making an orniment a day for the tree.. since we are waiting to be able to move and without being able to go get a tree and put it up it's hard to make it feel Christmas-y here for us. We hope to move next weekend.. no not the one coming up, but the electric at MILs new home won't be hooked up now until next Monday, so we may be moving the weekend before Christmas :(
