Has anyone read the article (I want to say it is US magazine) about Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes? It talks about their differences in how to school Suri. I won't go into the detail here I just want to say that the article did mention that Katie would like for Suri to be a "normal" kid and go to school and not be homeschooled. It also mentioned Tom's older children and how they are HSed and not very social without many friends. The celebrity stuff doesn't usually interest me but this really irritated me. Alot of people think that HSed kids are socially inept and weird. This will just add fuel. Grrr!
It doesn't really bother me because I think that Tom and Katie are a little out there anyway. That is one thing about being in Alaska that I do like is that homeschoolers are the norm. Their are sooo many of us that we are just like any other family.
Freaks are freaks whether or not they homeschool. LOL I know plenty of "normally" schooled kids that I consider Freaks. LOL Okay, that aside....look at the bright side, a star like Tom will fight to keep his right to homeschool.
We have a large HSing community out here so most people know someone that HSs. I know I shouldn't let things like this bother me but it does sometimes. It does make me feel better, though, that my kids can talk to anyone of any age and be comfortable with it. How is that possible if we never leave our house?
Long ago, I saw a show on tv that was about Alaska, and it showed kids "going to school" by ham radio because they lived far from school and it was winter.... I always thought that was so neat a concept! Do people still "school" that way?
I'm not sure. I know that some remote villages only get one radio station and no tv. They have charter schools here that give you everything that you need and are pretty lenient. The colleges really push the students that are going for a teaching degree to sign on to their incentive program and they have to agree to go teach in a village. One of my friends daughters did that and she has one more year to teach their and then they can move where ever they please. Most places here are very remote.
Wow, Alaska sounds like a different world. My son would like to move there, but I don't see it happening. I don't know if I could stand the cold. Anyway, sounds like homeschooling is encouraged.
Let me see...I can think of a dozen other reasons why they might not be very social and why they might not have many friends. The biggest being that they have superstar parents who can't walk out the door without being followed by photographers. In addition, their father divorced their mother and then went on public television to jump on a couch to tell everyone how much in love he was with a woman who is too young to be their mother -- biologically at least. Even if they had been in public school, they would have gone into hiding after. Oh, AND their step-mother tells the word that she thinks they are anti-social rejects.
yea...I agree with Alice...if your parents are weird your chances are...well. It goes back to what my dh said before we started hs. "Does hs make people weird or is it just that weird people homeschool." He still thinks it leans toward the weird people homeschool side....me included. I think it is a combination of both. We are certainly outside the mainstream, and there for not quite "normal" but there is a lot to be said for nonconformity. I feel so sorry for the children of stars. For that matter the stars themselves, although at least they got to choose for themselves. Although I do wonder if they knew what they were getting themselves into. So, try as they might, I doubt Suri will get to be much of a "normal" kid. Andie Mcdowell did ok with hers...she moved them to Idaho to a small town and did'nt brut it about much.
Mayim Bialik (sp?) HSes her kids and I doubt they are weirder than any other 'star' babies. Unless you count the fact that they're Jewish
wasn't she "Blossom" ? Hey...Lisa Whelchel (Blair from Facts of Life) homeschools her kids, too. Even wrote a few great books on it.
Yes LIsa Whelchel home educated her kids. I ended up getting one of her books and read it and there are some things that she does with her kids and I thought were just outstanding so of course yapped about it with others (homeschoolers of course lol) and some of us decided to give some of her ideas a whirl with great success!
