We have previously done abeka history which my ds finds extremely boring and has difficulty remembering all the names and dates. We are now doing Colorado Moms highschool history. But this leaves me not knowing what to do next year. I do have dd's abeka history books that I could use, but I would rather find a better fit for him. What are you using? Any suggestions?

Rachael is doing Notgrass World History this year. It combines Bible, History, and World Lit. She's enjoying it. TeacherMom has also done it with herdaughter. You might want to check it out. It's for high school. There's also an American History course.

DS is doing American History in co-op this year. I have Streams of Civilization for next year. We will probably make sure to build the timeline and read some extra books as times/people/events interest him.

If you like the textbook approach check out BJU. We used Abeka for one year and sd hated it for history (so did I). We used BJU for American and she really enjoyed reading it. The test questions were much more manageable and not just what date... type of questions.

One suggestion is to read Joy Hakin's Story of Us series. It is easy to read, interesting and filled with illustrations/pictures. I found myself reading it for enjoyment. My son enjoys them also. I believe they sell curriculum guides or something for them now also. You could make up your own questions or have him write summaries (English credit also).

Another suggestion is to guide what you want him to learn about and read fiction/non-fiction about WWI, WWII, the depression.... (fill in the blank). Go to the library and have him pick out books and research. Also, you could rent movies (Go- Netflix!)

I plan on using both of the methods with my son. Time will tell which works better.

If you like the idea of using Joy Hakin's Story of US, Sonlight uses those books in their American History In-Depth designed for grades 7 - 11.

I will be using Sonlight or Notgrass for American history next year. My son will be in 9th grade. Wish I had used one of them and could tell you more. They both look good.

check out Ancient Civilizations & the bible, or Romans, reformers and revolutionaries. Both written by Diana Waring, and Published by answers in Genesis. Unashamedly christian and creationist. Caters to lots of different learning styles. You can use books you already have with it. We just love it....but I guess you can tell that, lol.
