I live close enough that we are there fairly often. We don't fish so I can't help with that one, although I see people fly fishing in the Firehole river all the time so it must be pretty good.

The website can probably answer most of your questions http://www.nps.gov/yell/index.htm

May is early season in Yellowstone so be prepared for snow and cold. So far we are having a dry winter so there may be less snow than in the last couple years. Here is a list of when roads should open (weather permitting)
Roads will open to motorized, wheeled vehicles as follows:

    *
April 16, 2010—Weather permitting, west-side roads open to motor vehicles. Mammoth to Norris Junction to Madison Junction to Old Faithful; Madison Junction to West Entrance. In addition, Norris Junction to Canyon opens to wheeled vehicles.
    *
May 7, 2010—Weather permitting, Canyon to Lake, Lake to East Entrance opens to wheeled vehicles.
    *
May 14, 2010—Tower to Tower Fall opens to wheeled vehicles. Lake to West Thumb, West Thumb to Old Faithful, and South to Old Faithful opens to wheeled vehicles. Cooke City via Colter Pass to the Chief Joseph Scenic Highway intersection to the Long Lake gate shall open as soon thereafter as possible.
    *
May 21, 2010—Long Lake Gate over the Beartooth, and Tower Falls to Canyon will be open.

My boys always think Old Faithful is a must see, no matter how often we see it. They love any of the geysers. Upper and Lower Falls are impressive and the rest of the canyon, too.

Not sure of your kids ages, but if they are 5-12 there is a fun junior ranger program available. There is also a junior scientist program for that age and older I believe (we haven't done that one yet).

If you have any specific questions I can try to find answers for you.

You should go and check out the lodge/hotel right by Old Faithful. It is really cool architecture.

Thank you for the info ladies.

It is just dh and I for 7 days...its our 15th wedding anniversary.

We are staying in Idaho ( cabin) just 30 miles from the Tentons and 42 miles from the South entrance of Yellowstone.

I know dh wants to river fish , canoe and horseback ride...so I will be doing that too ( I love that stuff anyways). Of course the hiking will be great.

I'm kind of glad its a mild winter there, we wanted to be there in the spring and before all the tourist get there.

Anything else you can add , like must see places or towns....please do. We are game for anything really even drive a couple of hours to see a cool town or attraction. No real schedule for us while we are there.

There is a bear and wolf preserve in West Yellowstone Montana that we like. We really liked the museum a lot. I bought several really neat books there. Other than that we just went sight seeing really.

congrats on getting away with your hubby! I am so jealous!

The fishing on the Green river is always good. That is about 50 mile south of Jackson. While your in the area if you have time you should check out Granite Hot Springs in the Hoback Canyon just south of jackson.
