We are doing a computer skills program starting in Jan. Sd will be using Professor teaches. I am not sure how good it is yet since we have not started it. Since sd was in ps they starting using powerpoint fairly early so she is familar with that. This semester we will focus on excel and word mainly and access, frontpage and publisher if we have a chance.

ds taught powerpoint to jr highers when he was in 5th grade so I am not worried about that one, he has known word for years, he creates his own video games at this point.. I allow him to have "graphic Art" as a class right now cause he is constantly wanting to create on the computer.
but I was just wondering if there is a set time that I should be doing more detailed work with him? He is 7th grade now, I think I have a couple years before he is supposed to do this stuff but I am just wondering at the moment.. thats all

Right now we use BJU exclusively because we enrolled in the BJU HS Academy. After reading all the posts am I doing the right thing just using BJU??
My 9th grader seems to be doing well, she loves the spanish, grammar, geography and health. She seems just okay with the lit and she hates the BJU science. Algebra 1 is one of her best subjects (to my surprise).
Trying to prep my 8th grader for the task ahead next year we are doing BJU also but she dislikes it very much. Last year we had a mix of different things Alpha Omega, SOS, various reading and spelling.
As we are enrolled in the Academy they said we had to use their curriculum. We only enrolled for the record keeping aspect. Do I have to use only their curriculum? Did I waste money enrolling for the record keeping? How are the other parents getting diplomas and transcripts?
I know that is a lot of questions, but I've not had contact with another homeschool parent in about 5 yrs! I'm so excited to have people understand that just because we homeschool we are not socially disfunct and we don't spend all day doing nothing, hanging out in our PJ's (well at least not everyday). :)

snorman if you find one thing works with one but not with the other I would try changing up, that is wht I had to do with my three. first one did okay with LP but then we swiched to SOS withjr/sr high level for second child with some then all, third has a big mix of styles and levels and that works with him..

    Snormann,

I felt I should reply to your post, because I almost did the same thing. I was looking at the BJU catalog and wishing I had the money to dive in and enroll in the program. I am now glad I didn't have the money. My son does not do well with the textbook approach to learning and I am trying to help him learn with using other techniques. That being said, I am using some textbooks. I don't feel confident enought to teach some subjects without a textbook.

The other thing I wanted to share is that you DON'T have to have anyone else do your transcript for you and your child does not have to graduate from anything that is "accredited". If it is important to you-than go for it. But it isn't necessary. There are some great articles here:

    http://www.homeschooloasis.com/article_chart.htm

Look up the article "The issue of Accreditation". You will probably either wholeheartedly agree or disagree, but when I read it, I felt a big wave of relief. I am not always 100% sure of how I am going about this adventure called homeschooling, but I know that if I had continued to try to shove my son into the mold of "school at home", our relationship would continue to suffer and lead to more stress. Anyway, I would suggest you pray about it and trust God with the big decisions. I feel that learning is important, but I think we place much to much importance on meeting some arbitrary guidelines (professional transcripts and diplomas). One funny thing- the military usually excepts homeschool transcripts and diplomas as long as they look professional.

All in all , I am saying don't worry about everything and trust God.

We do Pure & simple computer science in years 7 & 8. I feel this will be enough, although if they were very keen, i would find something more. But it is pretty comprehensive, has 2 levels, includes all the basics (word/database/spreadsheet/typing etc) and some programming using logo. my kids know way more than me on this topic now ;)

    Great ideas!

Computer science is an area I have not considered till now. Computers seem to be the future.

My very favorite high school pick is the new science series of DIVE cds. They are college prep level, help your high school student with note-taking skills, include all labs, and also are helpful in preparing the college-bound student with cumulative exams.

    Media arts

Hi Teachermom, Here is what Media arts consist of for Malia's high schooler Christina - she was involved in working on Christian Films being produced here in Louisville, KY. She worked on a few films that you can find on the IMDB database:

Basically 120 hours of work = 1 class credit.

I didn't have a chance to read all of the replies. I know there are some great responses for you already!

I homeschooled two all the way and due to circumstances only hsed the third part way through High School. As with the younger grades, we used whatever worked for us at the time. We used some secular Literature, BJU Bible, the Writer's Inc series for writing (I forget which one is for High S), and did about a year of grammar. Saxon was our main math, but we supplemented with others, since Saxon did not have a Geometry, but incorporated it into their other courses.

I used ABEKA for some of the sciences, and unit studies combined with the texts for both science and history.

It was a LOT of work for me, but I was never nor ever have been embarrassed by the education my children received.

The most important thing that I did, in my opinion, was to get and use the book High School, a Home Designed Form+U+La. (I think that was the name). To me it was the most invaluable resource for High School. From everything to college entrance requirements to designing your own curriculum and courses to alternatives to higher education and writing transcripts! That book has it all!!! WONDERFUL!!!

Wishing you all the best on your journey through High School! It was a challenge, but I loved teaching the kids as they got older and watching them develope into young men and women! :)

    Countrygirl,

The book you spoke of is a wonderful book. That book is sitting next to me. The exact title is Senior High: A Home-Designed Form+u+La. The author is Barbara Edtl Shelton. There are other good homeschooling your high schooler type books but I like Barbara's sense of humor. After I read the book, I felt like I could do it and I did. One child has been homeschooled through high school and now we have one more to go. It has been a wonderful experience.
