I'm just wondering if I'm being too laid back here. This is my first year homeschooling. I pulled my son out of school after a month and a half. My general goal is to get through 2 or 3 math lessons a week (which will bring us to the end of the RightStart math A by the end of the year). We also do phonics and writing almost daily which takes about an hour a day. And we're using Five in a Row, which covers art, a little bit of science (we covered our provincial outcomes for science already through just using worksheets I printed off the internet, and general discussion, and I'm not fussed at all about a lack of science at his age), a related math lesson, and language arts. We also stick a thing on a map from where the story is from to get a bit of geography in there too. The whole works take anywhere from 1-1.5hours, done in small segments throughout the day, which doesn't really seem like much compared to the 15hrs a week he would be in ps for each week. I feel like we're covering the basics though. Should I be doing more? Thanks
About an hour a day. Sometimes less sometimes a bit more. We do use a few worksheets but both of us prefer lapbooking, reading, playing and just fun stuff. What you are doing sounds fine
When my DS7 was in K, it was probably 45 mins or less not including when he's join his sisters for science and field trips....he also liked to do it in 10-15 blocks and then have some wiggle/play time in between. In 1st grade, he decided he's rather just get it done all at once to have more "free time" afterwards. He continues in the "get it done" mentality for 2nd grade but does like to read his book in the middle of seatwork to help break it up a bit.
45 mins-1hour for my twin boy's. We do Singapore Earlybird math, phonics lesson, writing practice, read alouds, HOD for for Bible & history.
Oh good, I'm glad to hear that less isn't uncommon. I think if he would stay on task a bit more with his printing, he'd be done everything in under and hour. How long do you all take off for the summer? Do you just break for the same time as public school?
I'm currently doing K work as well...and do not plan on taking any time off necessarily....I'm planning to make it a part of our morning routine to continue to stay on top of the basics (math, writing, reading) I figure by the time any of his friends get outside, we'll be done so it's really not going to "interrupt" our summer.
If you're using FIAR, I would say about 15 minutes for math, then later 30 minutes for the FIAR lesson. Then the rest of the day would be play learning and reading books...you know, having fun. Welcome to homeschooling and welcome to the spot! I pulled my ds out of kindergarten after 1/2 a year also. My mistake though was trying to get him to do the 4 hour/day school work. I wish that I would have known about FIAR then, I would have tried it, and just had fun!
