I have the wordly wise 3000 book 1 book. I am wondering though when it would be appropriate to start using? It seems very advance... I.m not sure DS is ready for this yet. Any suggestions? Or even an idea for a different vocabulary curriculum?

wordly wise is a hard book, even 1. It's not that it's advanced in my opinion it's just words we normally don't really use. How old is your son?

I agree that some of the words are ones we don't normally use. Supposedly, the book level is the same as the grade level, so book 1 would be 1st grade. Supposedly.

We started using Wordly Wise this year. The kids are doing 3rd grade work in all other subjects, so we grabbed Book 3. They've done all right with it, although I confess that I skip some of the activities on occasion.

Have you thought of using your spelling words as a vocabulary list as well until your child's older?

Phillip is doing Wordly Wise 3000, Book 3 this year. He's fourth grade, and it's working well for him. Edited to say he's started in Book 3 because that's what I just happened to have! I bought it at a sale long ago when Rachael was younger.

DS just recently turned 7 and in 2nd grade. He has a fairly large vocabulary in real life and I don't want him to lose that or not expand it. We just started sequential spelling so I'm not sure how that would work out for vocab too... a lot of the words so far are basic words, you know?

My son is 7, and we use sequential spelling, too! LOL I usually use my SS sentences that I'm supposed to give for the word as a way of defining them.

The words in SS WILL get longer; he'll be doing 25 words per day pretty quickly.

Honestly, though, my 7 year old has done fine with WW for vocab. You go over the words for a week. I would recommend using a highlighter to highlight the actual definitions, though. It's made it SO much easier for the kids to learn the words and use them to do the exercises.

I'm considering using this for ds for Vocab. Sice some of you use it, could you answer a few questions for me?
    1. Could anyone expand on what was said about words not normally used (maybe give some examples of words taught in 1st grade level)?
    2. How useful would it be if you didn't get the Teacher Manual? Is it one of those programs where the Teacher manual is a really important part, or would it work just as well with just the student book?
    3. Can anyone give me a few examples of the activities it has the child do?

    sorry to hijack the thread.

Since I don't have Book One, I can't help you with a word list!

I don't have the TM for the book (Book 3) Faythe and Phillip are doing. I can do without it, but occassionally I wish I had it. This is especially true with the narrative. I almost have to read it myself to know the answers. I do have the one for Rachael, but she grades her own stuff usually.

It starts by giving a word list, with dictionary definitions. Then the first activity is FINDING MEANINGS. You chose two phrases that go together and then write them together as a sentence:

    a) A look of arrogance is one that
    c) shows the joy of victory.
    b) A look of triumph is one that
    d) shows acceptance of defeat.

Next, is JUST THE RIGHT WORD. There is a sentence, with a phrase in italics. You need to find a vocabulary word to replace the phrase:

The seperation of different races in public schools was outlawed in 1954.

Then APPLYING MEANINGS: (Can have one to four answers!)

Which of the following are ceremonies?
    a) the swearing in of a president
    b) the election of a president
    c) a wedding
    d) a birthday

Then WORD RELATIONSHIPS...this is circling synonyms/antonyms or analogies.

Last is a short narrative with questions. The questions either has a vocabulary word in it; if not, you are expected to use one in your answer.

Then at the end, they often have some interesting information about the origins of someof the words.

My second grader is using Book 2. It's just right for him but he does read about a 4th+ reading level although comprehension isn't as high. He does pretty well on it for the most part.

My girls really disliked WW and I switched my oldest to Get A Clue (online thru HS buyers co-op) for 5th grade last year. My current 4th grader is using it too this year even though its for 5-12th grade....she's just going slower. Online is great for her because she has fine motor issues that make lots of workbook writing harder....so I save it for "have to write" subjects.

My son likes workbooks and WW (so far) so I'll keep him working through it until he complains...lol....or it stops working well for him.

You might look the book up on cbd.com. They provide sample pages to look at so that you can get an idea of what you're buying.

Thank you for the great description, Jackie. Thank you Shelley, as well. Between the sample pages, the detailed description from Jackie, and the reviews I've found, I believe I have enough to make up my mind about using it with ds.

Here is the very first word list of book 1:
benefit, complete, develop, dismay, ease, hail, lack, master, patriot, project, recommend, remark, represent, sufficient and utter.

May be too late, but I hope it helps. :)
