We are trying to shift our thinking for Christmas, but didn't know there was an organization that is campaigning for it. I think this is exactly the kind of group we all need to get behind. Each of my boys is getting three gifts (one from us, one from their brothers, and one from my mom) and a pair of chickens donated to Gospel for Asia. I don't know that they will really understand the chickens, but after a couple of years, they will come to expect that Christmas is more about giving to others than anything else and if we stop the insane spending we'll have more left over to give to those who really need it. http://news.yahoo.com/s/time/20091215/us_time/08599194759000
We have always just given our boys three gifts for CHRISTmas because baby Jesus received three gifts.
I just want to affirm what you and the churches highlighted in the link you shared are trying to do. When we seek to honor Him, God provides a way for us to do that--sometimes in surprising ways. You and everyone on here who is cutting back in order to give more have my total support and best wishes!!
amen! we have been giving to different places last few years as the kids get up, Angel Tree is one of them, its fun to see the kids choose to give up a gift, so we gavethem the choice last year. They all three said YES of COURSE! lol A
We have decided to exchange names among the adults...the boys are the only children and the deal is We (mom and dad) will get them something and maybe thier sisters...but it will be one or two gifts. I will still have the boys make something for their gifts to others. Then we will pick out an obvious Charity...we give regularly, but I am not sure the boys really notice. (Compassion and the Christmas box) I would like to start buying a goat or something...I just love that idea.
Just be sure you study out the company, the two you mentioned are good. Some out there spend more money on advertising than they do on the kids.
That's why I chose Gospel for Asia. 100% goes to the family. The operating budget is raised separately.
I found the Advent Conspiracy this year too! I sent the link to my pastor and he was very interested in doing this next year. What an great way to show our children what is really important compared to what they are seeing on television through the holidays! Deborah
