Do any of you have experience with children who sleepwalk? I just discovered that my 5 yo has been sleepwalking for the last three weeks (DH saw him up and around, but thought he was awake and getting into things while we slept). I know nothing about sleepwalking other than the little I've seen on TV. I know I can get information online (and intend to), but I'd also like to hear from people who've btdt. Also, he has a loft bed. He obviously hasn't had any problems getting in and out of it in his sleep, but is this something I should worry about? And if it matters, he whimpers or cries the whole time he's up and about.
We had a foster son who walked in his sleep once in a great while. He was four at the time. After we put him back in his bed he would stay there the rest of the night. One night he got up and walked into the dining room and peed under a small table with a sewing machine on it. Freddy was yelling No John wait!!! But it was too late. He never woke up during the whole thing.
My DD sleepwalks. It happens a few times a month. Sometimes she will come in and tell us something which we think is a dream. She will then go back to bed. Its very strange. I plan on asking the doctor about it the next time we go in.
This has apparently been going on nearly every night for the last three-ish weeks. Like I said, DH kept seeing him, but didn't realize he was sleepwalking. It wasn't until I was up late last night doing homework that it became clear. He tries to lay down with DH, who is currently occupying the couch so he can get sleep (whilst baby and I are in our room). He roams around aimlessly. DH has been getting frustrated with him because he keeps yelling at ds to go back to bed and he just ignores dh. Well, now we know why. He's not awake.
My son was a sleepwalker at about 5 yrs old or so. He would even walk down stairs and back up. (I was always afraid he'd fall!) He would have absolutely NO memory of what he said, did, or what was said to him. You could gently walk him back to bed and talk to him and he would respond, but not ever remember the next morning. I think many kids, especially boys, do this. Then as quickly as it starts, they'll stop. I wouldn't be too concerned about it. Carol
both my daughters sleep walk. The oldest even did it when we went to her great Aunts and spend the night there. I woke up because I felt a cold breeze hitting me and the door was open and my daughter no where to be found. Found her walking the main street at 3 pm at night. My aunt lived a block from the main street. I was never so scared. We then got locks high ones for all doors, that was enough for me. Also, you are never suppose to wake them. I never did just lead them by there hand right back to there bed.
I had a couisin who used to sleepwalk outside, too. I'd make sure things were safe (extra door locks??), but wouldn't worry too much. I think he's probably OK with the bed. I think sleepwalkers can do everything they can when awake.
