So, my co-op leader just e-mailed me today needing a last minute person to take over her art class (she's bitten off more than she can chew) and being the team player (yawn, stretch) that I am I agreed. Now what?!?!?! It's an art class for children ages 4-8. She had some suggestions about starting off with primary and secondary colors...okay...that MAY fill the first class...but what about all the weeks to follow? I'm scouring the internet and am getting nervous. Any suggestions???

4 - 8? You can get into mixing primary colors and making other colors. IE: Red and blue make purple, red and yellow make orange, and yellow and blue make green. Have them do art work using the colors to make other colors.

My kids did an art class at the library where they focused on different mediums. The art itself was very open-ended. For example- one week they used watercolors. The teacher did a brief intro to watercolors and showed a few examples. The kids then created their own pictures. One week was nature art-they brought in grass, twigs, sand, sheels, etc. and made a pic using those things. My kids really enjoyed it. Each week, she gave out a list of items to bring to the next class, so she didn't have to bring the supplies.

what about making a color wheel... my girls did that with water colors and love it.

can you do what ever you want?
what about sand art...... get bottles and fill with different color sand.
    clay modeling
making there own playdough and making animals with it.
coloring with colors boring but something to fill the day in
yarn take a picture and take different color yarn and put glue on the yarn and follow the picture with different color yarns.

I have been teaching co-op for years now especially the little ones. You have a large gap there 4yr-8yrs there is going to be a big difference on the learning ability. So any reading or writing might be out so anything they will be doing make sure its mostly cut out already because 4yrs have a hard time cutting sometimes, coloring is your safest bet or painting.

Start out by giving them a coloring page so they can color (good to have a theme going you can print out tons of free ones online. My favorite site is crayola site) so when they arrive they can start to color right away. This is good for any age. (Takes about 10-15min depending on how creative they are) LIl kids love markers the best.

(Have it colorful looking the table with the markers/crayons in a colorful tin, color paper table cloth, alluring to the kids so they want to stay. Have their name on the chair or table if you know in advance. Especially for the 4yr that cling to mommy you have to get them excited on staying so mom can sneak out :)

Read a story on art (Takes another 5-10 min)

    Start your art project 30-45min

Leave yourself time that they can help with clean up. This is VERY good for them to learn. 5-10min for clean up

Have a snack if the parents allow it. Nothing sugar. Popcorn is good, cherrios, fishy crackers, grapes. (10min)

*Here is a good one on making an art book day by day http://www.kinderart.com/artbook/

*You can have a color theme going. I did this one year where we did one color each week. I made that color playdoh for that color, we read about the color, we ate something of that color.

Crayola has a great lesson plans for educators http://www.crayola.com/educators/index.cfm?n_id=5

Just to let you know painting takes tons of time. I love to paint with the kids. I make sure they bring an old tshirt. I use washable paint. I use the lil tops from the laundry liquid deterigents to put water in it to clean paint brush to switch colors. (You would be amazed on how many kids dont know how to dunk clean their brushes before going to the next color.

I also make them fill up there own water caps and clean them at the end. This takes around 5min each time. They love to do it & it kills time! :)

If you need anymore help just msg me or here. Another hint. Don't let them take home the art work. You will find it on the ground later on hehe...I keep everything then at the end of the semester I put it in a notebook for each one (which they colored themselfs earlier) then send it home all the work they did including the coloring pages we did.

They are very proud of it and love to show their parents the work that they did that semester. We also use it to show and tell at the end of the semester to all the co-op

King, Penny and Clare Roundhill. “Artists’ Workshop” series. Crabtree Publishing.

Check out this series!!! It's very good. Each book is a topic, such as STORIES or ANIMALS. They show real artwork that fits in that catagory, and then gives project ideas based on the artwork. I used it with my girls when they were that age!
