anyone on here w/o some sort of degree

I have a BA in a social science, but I don't have an education degree. I homeschool my 9 y.o. son for now.

 

I have 3 certificates or pretty pieces of paper that say I can run and control computer networks and design websites. I only got those because when I was using those skills, being a female was NOT a plus (especially since I was young).

I can read.... therefore I can teach my kids.

 

LOL girl please... I barely even made it to high school (school wasn't a priority for girls, according to dad..lol)... then I dropped out of school in the 10th grade, to take care of my dying grandmother so she wouldn't have to go to the nursing home, then went back to school because I Promised her I would and I only have a diploma because of the kindness of our principal at the time, he made sure I got that diploma because he knew my situation..LOL so no degrees here except for the school of life and hard knocks I only have as much education as I do because I took it upon myself to get my own education...and I can say that I am actually pretty proud of myself and honestly my children are getting a much better education than I Ever did, lol

 

I graduated high school only. Oh, I had a small scholarship to one of the top ten art schools in the country, but my family was too poor to even begin to pay for the supplies I would need. I had to work and had been since I was twelve years old to buy my own clothes, so no degree.

I used to feel a bit out of sorts because all my friends had graduated from college. Then a strange twist in my life changed my perspective: I began doing research, gave a few seminars (learned the hard way to be a speaker), and wrote articles. Then I was invited to be one of four keynote speakers at an international conference where I presented my research to scientists and doctors from all over the world with a great many degrees, since then I come to the conclusion that it is not the degree that is the measure of woman (or a man); it is her (his) aspiration.

Homeschooling is my highest aspiration currently, but I have a few things on back burner. I would like to go back to my first love: art.

 

I do have a couple of degrees, actually -- BA in psychology with a minor in sociology, and a master's in social work. Everything I know about education I have learned OJT: I was a student for plenty long enough, and a school social worker for twenty years. But all that did for me was to help me choose which pieces of curriculum MIGHT suit certain kids, and affirm in me the notion that a kid does NOT have to be at the same level in every subject nor be in the same curriculum as other kids the same chronological age. Oh, and I can also tell what test scores actually mean on those annual achievement tests, and on individualized testings/assessments. And I can BS with the best of 'em -- educational doublespeak, where you choose very carefully how you state certain things to make it sound one way while it's actually another.

 

I have an AA degree in secretarial skills. Typing seems to be the only relevant skill that I learned. I did finish high school but could not stand it. Because of that I only attended school about one day a week and ditched school all the other days. Not being in high school prepared me better for homeschooling. I did not have to unlearn things.

If you can learn, you can teach.

 

I graduated High School and have some certificates from military training, but other than that no formal education.
I use a hodge podge curriculum style. I don't even think it makes it easier to have been an educator, we expect more from our own kids than other people kids

 

I don't have a degree.

wow! I so wish I could show all these responses to my old high school counselor who told me that people who don't get degrees never accomplish anything! bet she couldn't have hs her kids!LOL. no degree here either. barely a high school diploma. already my kids are better edjukaded than me!

It is amazing what you can do in life w/o a degree. Hubby says I should get a degree since I can get one for free/or cheaply but really don't wanna. Told him I was gonna work at the library (if they are still around) when the kids all graduate.

 

No degree here, but I have a HS diploma and nearly 3 years of college done. I didn't learn a thing and I have no regrets to not finishing my degree. It was a waste of money for me. My dh doesn't have a degree either but has 4 years of college done. He was teaching the teachers things and finially got fed up with paying for an education which he was supposed to be learning things...not teaching the teachers.

Our friends were over last weekend and we were talking about degrees...he as an AA degree and makes the least amount of money in his whole family (but he does make quite a bit) He said that in his family the brother that has the least amount of education makes the most money, and the one with the second least education makes the second most money and so on. We thought about it and everyone we know without a degree is making more money than those with a degree. Now we know that is not the rule of thumb, but we thought it was interesting.
