    Hi!
My name is Dominique, and I am homeschooling my 8 year old here in the land of Oz. We have been HS since kindergarten. It is mostly ......HARD, DIFFICULT, IMPOSSIBLE, FRUSTRATING.....but somehow the boy can read and write. Lately, I want to quit and chuck him back in ps, but I know that's not what is best for him. I just find myself so isolated in this area. We are about an hour from the closest town with a WalMart, and hs families are so misunderstood here. There seem to be quite a few, but we're all so geographically distant. We have hung out with a couple of groups in the area, but none seems to be really active as a group. I haven't yet met a mom who has been in the trenches long enough to be any kind of help or comfort to me. My son is so lonely, and frankly so am I. I am here to find ideas and answers and encouragement from those of you who know what I'm dealing with or will be dealing with soon. Thanks so much!!!

    Dom

Hi! I am in the extreme opposite end of the state. I am in a tiny town called Elkhart. It's minutes from Colorado, and across the HWY is Oklahoma. We're barely in the state. lol. We've been back in the area for a little over a year now, but we were in Savannah for 5 years before that. We miss civilization! lol.

Well, welcome Dominique. I wouldn't be too hard on yourself. School is a good place to meet friends, I will give it that, it just isn't very good at education. ha ha ha.

If you are new to the area, you and your son need to get out and explore. embrace the freedom of peeing outside. (He will like that better than you)
Just one benifit of not having close neighbors.

put yourself out there. I have found I have to be much more proactive since hs started...I do the calling and the inviting...people do "forget" the kiddo's are here. We are out of the loop a bit. ANd I hate to call. ugh. The things you do for love.

I have been given the chance to let him go to a Learning Zone (an educational help center) here in town. It's new, and the owner is a terrific Christian woman! We were drawn from the bag to get 4 free sessions! It's a real gift! He got to go yesterday, and he had a great time!! He was with other kids, he was encouraged, and he was enthusiastic about learning again. I can't tell you how much it meant to me!! I need that!!

We live in town (ha. ha. about 2000 people) and only about 1/2 block from the grade school. We see other kids all the time, he hasn't connected with them very well. In the country, kids are not too open to new, city kids comin' around. They are different. I never noticed when I was growing up, because I was one of them. Now I have a different perspective. He's shy, too. That makes it harder, but I am planning on getting him involved in the local 4-H club. That will be another opportunity to meet kids and parents.

I know I am rambling. I just don't have too many I can chat with about this stuff. I have been thinking I should start something to do for those of us who do homeschool here in town. I just don't know where to start or what to do exactly.

Anyways, thanks for the encouragement!! :0)

ramble away! that's what it's here for! welcome. isolation is a very common problem in some areas. I'm going to pray for God to lead you in the path of another mom who has the same need and for you to minister to each other. keep up the good work and again, welcome!
