If you couldn't live in the US, where would you go?

We all know that the situation in the Us is getting a bit scary, as far as government intrusion into every day life, and being able to live your life in the way you see fit. I don't think it will get so bad before my children are out of school, but if the US were to pass laws that curtailed your freedoms to school your children in the way you thought best; or worship in the way you wish; or protect your kids from bad influences; what would you do? Would you stay and try to change things? If you chose to leave this country, where would you end up? I honestly don't know what my family would do? I'm just curious. (This is why we must ALL research our options and VOTE! I love my country and want it to do well. It is up to each one of us to try to make our country better. The VERY VOCAL minority can mess things up pretty bad for the rest of us!)

Trust me: I've traveled to very many countries around the world. No matter how the latest news headlines might cause heartburn, this country stands alone in terms of personal freedoms. We have it so good: Freedom of worship, freedom to school at home, freedom of movement, freedom of opinion, freedom of the press, respect for the individual, respect for personal property, and so on. Headlines are often exceptions and scare unnecessarily.

I tend to agree with you. We have it good here, and the news media want to scare us into doing what they want.

I don't know where we would go, maybe find a hole in the ground and live like cave men!

Canada!! I left the USA to move to Canada last year and I love it. Taxes are quite a bit higher, but you get a lot of benefit from your taxes. I didn't feel like I received anything from my taxes in the USA. Here we all get good health care and the government gives mothers a monthly check.

I would move on. There comes a time where moving on is the right thing. Maybe Singapore? I am not sure, I have not really done the research.

    Some more food for thought:

    1) In England, the authorities pick up your garbage once every two weeks. You're allowed one bin for garbage, one bin for recycling, one bin for garden waste. You can be fined for putting the wrong item in the wrong bin. If you produce more than one bin's worth of garbage, tough - they won't take it. My father-in-law, for example, must push his full bins 1/4 mile up a 25% hill, because they won't stop at your house. Are you ready to live with that?

    2) Again, in Britain, if someone invades your home and you defend yourself with, let's say, a baseball bat, when the person attacks, you could be jailed for years. Are you ready to live with that?

    3) When I was in Russia, one person in the local office was terrified. She was a Russian citizen, she was well-qualified, and she'd lived in Moscow for years - but she didn't have the official paperwork needed to live in the city. This takes time, costs money, and the process is quite corrupt. She could be arrested and imprisoned at any time. Could you live with that?

    4) When I visited China, I looked through the information book in the hotel room. Under 'Places of Worship', the entry was "See hotel management". Could you live with that?

    5) In Germany, it's illegal to homeschool, right? Could you live with that?

    6) In Singapore, my colleagues who smoke would walk 1/4 mile to find a trash can in which to throw away their finished cigarettes because of the stiff fine for litter. The same for chewing gum. The same for spitting in public. And it's a lashing for graffiti. The government forcibly takes 20% of the wage of young people, and the money can only be used to buy a house. Could you live with such rules?

    7) In Vietnam, I had a bayonet pointed at my stomach because I didn't understand the language and almost walked through the wrong door into a building.

It goes on and on. There used to be a wonderful commercial for American Airlines where a business traveler smiles as he sees an American jet and realizes it's going to take him home. It's a very real sentiment.

I have been to Europe. It's a nice place to visit. But if push came to shove, I think I'll stay right here and become the lunatic that lives in the back woods!
I'm not willing to give up without a fight.

When my sister and brother in law had to leave Cuba in a hurry one year, they actually had to run to catch the last plane out. As my brother in law ran past the attendant holding the door open for them he said, "where is this plane going?" The attendant said, "Charlotte, NC." My brother in law shouted, (as he ran down the hallway) "Say it again!" That would be me. Just give me the USA and I will stick it out. I have never traveled, but I have heard about the conditions in other countries from people who do travel. My youngest daughter's plastic surgeon nearly had me in tears talking about China and Thailand and the conditions there. I think home sounds pretty good to me.

We live in England, and must say we love it :) we have highish taxes but we have medical care, at the moment it is very relaxed on homeschooling, who knows whats around the corner though!!!

sorry must say our bins are collected weekly except with the snow, but we are out in the sticks! I know lots of people who have put the wrong thing in the wrong box, but it all goes in the same truck and gets mixed up anyway so a bit pointless!! and you get a note left :)

If we had to move it would be Australia, but for the warmth as i am a tropical bird at heart :)

When we lived in North Carolina, they had a trash system in place-that sounds similar to what Steve is describing. One bin for garbage, one for for yard waste, one for recycling. You may not produce more than those bins. And they better not be overflowing (lid completely closed) or forget about it. Oh, and they had large item pick up once a year. You had to put the items out a week in advance so the garbage pickers could have first dibs. They would drive all over the neighborhood going through everyone's garbage in broad daylight. Creepy.

Glad I don't have to deal with that any more.

I would choose the US any day, but would consider New Zealand if I needed to move. I prefer visiting other countries and then coming home though.

I live so far out in the sticks that we don't have trash pick up. Hubby hauls it to work and puts it in the dumpster. Things that decompose go in the compost, and things that we can burn, we burn it.

I'm not going anywhere. If things really got out of control I'd move to Alaska, but I'm not leaving the US.

No offense, but that sounds like welfare to me. I just have no interest in taking money from the government, regarldess of how high my taxes are.

I would like a monthly check - not sure if I want it from the government though ;)

Me - someplace it doesn't snow is my 1st response because I'm tired of looking at it....

Otherwise - probably hide in Alaska..... but I'd go to Australia - that sounds nice ;)

But I don't want to leave I like it here when my heater is working.... (which it's not right now)
