I think part of OUR problem is Jake and Alexis are at such different levels so when I would read aloud - Jake would fidget and Alexis would daydream.

Have you considered letting them draw a picture about whatever you're reading? Listening to books being read aloud I think is a learned skill, unless you've a really gifted reader, and honestly how many of us can say we are that? I'm better than Carl, but that's not saying too much!

Right now Tapestry of Grace is working since they are both working on different things and seem to be ok with that.... they are reading ABOUT the same stuff - just on their own level :)

we got stuck on King Aurther we had to read tons of shakespear in the begining of the year for Drama class so we are bouncing around a bit. dh had some videos as well but he was reading the I will check out the Shakespeare stealer, we discussed the differences in his (S) plays and why they changed and how back in fall.
But the thing we are wanting is a book about the artists who painted ... so At some point here I need to get that research done and find the names of some.
We are reading in the text about QUeen E and discussing our family history stuff in the same era. IT has been fun. Finding people who we have heard about from Grama in the past !
Somehow we will also get more reading done after next weekend things settle down here and I can focus on reading more with him.
I had books checked out that I seriously do not know if he read because he was being at home twice a week while he had to use the home computer for his SOS courses, but now that he is using an old rebuild computer of his own we can take it with us again and w are all happy! I am at least cause we are back on track for school stuff and will still finish wiht the main stuff early and extra stuff on time!

yes we were really facinated with that so I was starting to look at them, more closely for ds, we did some extra online researh more so this year because oru library road is undergoing major transformation.. the way we go to the library right now is around the city buildings and through thier parking lot and its a real hassel, so we have been really bad at getting new books on time and all> I had the begining fo the year set up but now we are just floudnering it seems.
This post and the one on high school have me realising this has been my worst year and my best year in home schooling Lol
im going to post a new thread on it...

try "The Second Mrs. Giaconda" by Konigsburg. I read it to my kids; it's an interesting fictional account of DaVinci.

For science and art, I would skip the formal curriculum and find things online or at the library. My 8 yr old reads books endlessly and then gets experiments from the books. Also, I did use Considering God's Creation for science. That is $30 and lasts 3 yrs (12 units a year is how I did it, some people rush through and do it in one year, but I do not recommend that).

Main thing to remember, it is not about getting things done, it is about having fun, learning, and instilling the love of learning. When I first started homeschooling, I fell in to the same trap as most people seem to, which is where I bought a lot of curriculum and tried to get through it as fast as possible and thought we had done so much. We do the ITBS every year. I saw a great increase in my daughter's scores when I relaxed and let her wallow in what she was learning. She got so much more out of it then. Even now, 6 years in to homeschooling, she remembers so much.
