Has anyone tried hatching an egg sac? I'm thinking someone did last year. I want to get one this spring. I think it'd be cool, plus I'd love to have them in my garden! I looked at a place in Columbus, but they don't carry them. I noticed that I can order one from Tobin's Lab for $20, but would rather get it more local if possible.

No, but it sounds like a great idea! We have them wild here and the boys catch them and make them "pets" for awhile. They are voracious eaters! Last year at a cub scout camp, he had an adult that ate constantly--three of four big bugs that day. They boys were glued to the cage watching the mantis stalk, catch and eat her lunch. They'd probably love to get an egg sack. Do you have any info on finding them in the wild? Keeping them?

Really I don't. A few years back, we went to the airport in Columbus to drop my parents off. I took the kids up to the top of the parking garage to watch the planes coming in, and we found two REALLY BIG ones. I had bought something, so I was able to catch one and put it into the sack. We released it in our garden, but never saw it again.

I had a small egg sack on my Christmas tree without my knowing it at all until it was too late. They hatched in my house in December and I found little baby guys all over my tree. I put them outside, but really... I doubt any of them made it. :( I would love to hatch one during the proper time.

Oh, dear!!! And they hatch zillions of little ones, from what I hear! I'm hoping that if we hatch one this year and release them in the garden, a few will make to to where they lay an egg sac for next year.
