Do your 1st/2nd/3rd grade students use? I am kinda torn (no pun intended) on either buying the paper with the solid/dashed/solid lines or just using regular wide ruled notebook paper. So I'm curious what your students use. I've been using the "primary" writing paper so far with them, but I wonder if now is a good time to change that or if I should just continue with it. I don't remember ever using "primary" paper in school...but I don't really remember much more than highlights of my first few years.
Ems used the dashed lined paper in 1st grade. After that we went to wide ruled. If your child is comfortable and able to write without the dashes as a guide, I see nothing wrong with moving on to wide ruled.
Next year my 1st grader will still use the paper with the dashes. I don't know when we'll move up to regular paper, but probably not until 2nd grade at least. But writing is not his strong suit, so he still needs it....
We used ruled paper but I did not buy it, I had a handwriting CD that allowed me to change font/rule sizes so I could choose the appropriate size. There are free on-line sources too: http://donnayoung.org/penmanship/handwriting-paper.htm
And you know, they make the dashed paper in different sizes. So you can introduce your child to a smaller line to get them ready for "regular" paper too. I remember seeing it at walmart and office max I think....
I still used the dotted/line paper with my youngest boy. The oldest IS now using regular lined paper, but his visual disability (and a 'generous' dose of sheer laziness) has really stunted his hand writing. So now I just have him do handwriting workbooks for practice. My little guy does use them for now. He's still having issues with spacing and sizing. But, as Patty already said, if your child is comfortable with wide lines or regular lined paper, just go with that. My daughter has never needed the dotted/lined paper. Almost makes me sick how lovely her printed writing is. (Her cursive on the other hand.....blerk!)
