What would you suggest for reading material? We are starting with once and future king -- Aurthur because dh wants him to read it!

Then we have several other ones that may be good for him already.. what do your ds8th graders like? And what do you recommend as they may be different! HA!~

we're doing a similar thing next year for dd 12. We are going to read the Hobbit, Tom Sawyer, The Hiding Place, some Sherlock Holmes and a few things from Tales from Shakespeare.

great I have all but one of those mentioned on my shelves too! COOL!
We have like three versions of Treasture Island to Jackie, one from my childhood, one from dh's and one kids version someone bought!

I'm so frustrated with "kid versions"!!! I wanted to do "The Three Musketeers" to go along with our history (we're at Louis XIV), but I've read the original, and there are parts not appropriate for my youngest one especially. So I got a watered-down version from the library, and couldn't stand listening to it for even one night. My kids even complained about it!

I too am in search of good lit, but for my 7th grader. I am wondering though. How do you do English? Does you child read out loud to you? Do you take turns? Does your child read on their own? How do you check their comprehension? Do you have your child do any activities along with the book?

right now my ds goes off and reads on his own and I have been lucky enough to find questions that go with the books he is reading. I don't always get a chance to read each and every novel so I am struggling with how to make sure my ds is #1 reading the required chapters and #2 checking his understanding.

All the above! There's also some great literature guides out there. Check out Total Language Plus or Progeny Press.

For keeping her English skills sharp we plan on using Easy Grammar. But the majority of her English we've gone over using BJUP grades 1-7 already. So we have a very firm foundation.
