WOW! I have been blessed with some pages from my friends geography bee lessons to add to my work on ds' geography world traveler studies for next year! I am so excited because it has a ton of ideas I had not yet thought of!( not yet cause I probably would have, like foods, religions of the area, mission work in area, language, vocabulary words lists, etc! Mapwork galore! So I am wondering if anyone else has joined one and how much fun they are>? They had ours in an inconvient to us location so I was not able to join back a couple years when she asked us to.. I am going to be really busy this coming week between drama class and copying lessons from her binder! I am glad I have a good copy machine at home cause I can go through and sort what I want to use and take my time! ANyone else out there doing Geography next fall I am getting some good stuff together so I will let you know when I am done!
My son was in the public school geo bee this year and did pretty well, considering he's a 4th grader and the test is for 4-8. (it was also the reason we waited to pull him from the school too, so he could compete.) He got very excited about the Bee and had a great time, however, we're also a very geography centered family, it's one of his favorite subjects. I'm hoping he can compete in the bee next year too. I guess I need to look into that to see how he can.
Our local homeschool group has been hosting Geo Bee contests for years. My kids all loved participating and my one son twice made it to State level, and one of the kids in our homeschool group actually ended up in the top 10 in our state. We travel a lot, play geography board games, play geography online games, and CD Roms games and watch geography movies and like poring over maps. We have also used most geography curriculum on the market (Sonlight year 5, while not strictly a geography curriculum would rank as my favorite). To do well your kids do need to be following the news as well - they like asking questions about where current events happened. It is a great contest! Prepare as well as you can and let your kids have fun. Meryl
