LOL ANyone have any idea how to open a locked file cabinet My dh bought me a gigantic steel commercial file cabinet from government auction. Maybe he's trying to give me a hint to clean up me desk  Anyhow it did not come with a key so I need to figure out how to open the darn thing I really do not want to pay for a locksmith that will charge us more than what he paid for the cabinet...
Perhaps that is why it was at an auction--locked with no keys . I know, tell your kids that there might be treasure inside it. Surely they will find a way to get it open. Just make sure the TNT is out of reach . Sorry. I don't have a clue.
Yup he knew it didn't have a key but it was like $50 so he thought he could just break it open. But then he decides he wants to keep lock intact so we can keep personal papers in there too...Of course even if we pick the lock we wouldn't be able to lock it back up anyways without a key. hmmmmmmmmm Great idea Sue May!!!!! It will be my extra credit assignment for tomorrow. Whoever opens mommy's cabinet gets a day off LOL
Welllll.....when I worked for a bank, we had to call the locksmith to come and drill open the lock. Is it possible to remove the back or bottom and you could remove the lock from the inside and then replace it? Not sure if it is one lock/multi-lock with several drawers or if you are talking about the office type cabinets with one lock and two doors....or better yet, post a pick and we can see if we come up with anything ingenious!
I can't find the link to the kit that I have, but here is a comparable pick kit http://www.idealcreations.net/ls06.htm And instructions: http://www.ehow.com/how_4840668_use-lock-pick-kit.html
I'm just sitting here smiling. I knew that I could count on the ladies in here for information and advice. I just never knew it would include breaking into something, lol.
maybe there's money in there! Have you googled lock picking yet? http://www.ehow.com/how_5072140_pick-lock-file-cabinet.html http://www.instructables.com/id/cheap-mans-lock-picks/ Let us know how it turns out.
Look for a manufacturer's label, probably front and center, top edge. Google the company and give them a call or an email. Tell them you bought it at a government auction, and give them the number that's on the lock (might need to get out your magnifying glass) itself. Get them to send you a key that fits that lock. Where I used to work, we had banks and banks of filing cabinets, but very few keys -- one key would open all the locks that had the same number on them.
