So my son's kindergarten graduation ceremony is tonight.

Well a month ago the teacher sent a note home telling what night and time it would be and that the kids needed to wear "church clothes"

    ok, fine.

Well today. at 3:50 today my son comes home with a reminder note. This time the note specifies that the kids can not wear tennis shoes, flip flops or crocs.

    Well, now I'm pissed.:twisted::twisted::twisted:

My son wears tennis shoes or crocs to church. He doesn't OWN a pair of "dress shoes". He normally wears jeans and a tshirt to church. But he does have a pair of khakis and some button up shirts, so I planned for him to wear those tonight with his crocs (which are the basic, solid black crocs).

Now I have to borrow money from my parents, and run around like a chicken with my head cut off (not to mention I'm in terrible pain from a UTI) and try to find my son a pair of 'dress shoes' that he'll probably hate, cry about and they'll hurt his feet and he'll never wear them again!

They are SIX YEAR OLDS!! Really, just nice, clean clothes and shoes isn't good enough???

I asked my mom if I should just send him in his crocs anyway, and she said no cause they might not let him participate, so I'm off to the store to go shoe shopping to waste money so my kid can participate in a one night event!

I never understood the point of K graduation. I mean, is it really that bad that we need a big "Good job. You survived" party?

When I was a youngster, we only had graduation for 6th and 12th grade. The rest of the grades had a popcorn party.

I would just go with what he normally wears to church. Silly rules.

I'd have sent him in the crocs. I doubt they would have turned him away simply because he didn't have the suggested footwear. If I thought they would, I might have skipped the whole thing and spend the dress shoe money on a night out a Chuckie Cheese instead.

send the bill and the note to the school principal. Include tht you are choosing to homechool him from now on to not have to deal with this silly stuff, that education comes to you not by the shoes you wear but by the effort of the teacher and student.

    How annoying!

I remember having to get some dress shoes for K graduation. I bought ours at the Goodwill store (because I REFUSED to spend a lot of money on dress shoes he'd never wear again.)

This brings to mind my frantic trip to WalMart to get my son a pair of khaki pants for a school function. (Their uniform pants were navy. All I had were navy pants. We didn't OWN a pair of khaki pants, yet they requested ''khaki pants' for this particular school function.) Grrrr! I got there and there were a couple of boys in navy pants.

I hope you find some acceptable shoes cheaply.

Can you find some little leather (or leather-like sandals) at Payless or Wal-Mart? My son uses those for his summer "dress shoes" and they aren't flip flops, tennies, or crocs...technically...lol.

And then they are still useful for the rest of the summer....just a thought.

I'd have sent him in his sneakers. They can't seriously not "let" him participate?!!! GRRRR - and instead of calling my mom-I'd have phoned the school!!! We live VERY far from anywhere were I could've gotten other shoes on a whim, nor could we have afforded it!!! I mean seriously-I think that is so ridiculous-it's not a high school graduation...

then again, there were a few at my high school graduation without even clothes on.....

I hope he has/had fun either way!

Well considering the time crunch, I didn't have a lot of options (rural town), so my mom paid $30 for some dress shoes. :/

I'm just so upset, he came home, we piled in the van, rushed to the store, paid $30 for shoes, rushed home, got everyone dressed, rushed to the school.

There were a couple of kids in what I call "dressy tennis shoes" you know black or brown suede shoes. But a ton of girls work flip flops with their dresses.

He worked so hard this year and I'm so proud of him, but it just makes me mad grrrr

You did the RIGHT thing to benefit your ds, good job mom!

Whether we agree with the teacher or not, apparently she had a strict dress code in which the students were required to adhere, the joys of ps.

I'm so glad it's almost over. He has a party Thursday and only goes half a day on Friday and then we are DONE! I can't WAIT! It's hasn't been a the worst year ever, but it's just been one little thing after another all year. Nothing that is going to ruin my child or can't be undone through homeschooling or that warranted him being yanked out right then, it's just the whole year has been one thing I don't agree with after another.

Sight words over phonics being stressed, EIP all year, the shoes, being marked as not knowing how to write his name cause he doesn't use PERFECT D'nealian handwriting, an hour of homework each night, being forced to read and write at age 5-6, only 20 minutes of recess each day and PE once a week, they only taught them the pledge of allegiance for their graduation ceremony....

They pretty much finished up their work (homework, tests, teaching new concepts, ect) the week before last, they are just giving them busy work this week. And I saw a change in him last week, like he could be a kid again, less stress, like a weight had been lifted off his shoulders. Just reinforced to me that homeschooling is the right choice. He's excited about reading again, he begs me to read to him now! He hasn't begged me to read to him since school started! I can't WAIT to get my little boy back, that little boy who is full of questions and loves to learn and loves books and is a joy to be around cause he's not stressed out all the time! I'm so excited!

I substitute at the local ps's and they too have kindergarteners writing. The kids that I've seen have really embraced it and haven't struggled. There is a student who transferred from another school who did not learn cursive and he is in 3rd grade and really struggling to write it and read it. Our hs curriculum introduced cursive in K.

Had we homeschooled all the time, I would have introduced reading and writing but wouldn't have FORCED it. And he writes ok, it just stresses him out that he doesn't write "perfect D'nealian" as they require. I plan to introduce cursive next year (in our school it's introduced in 3rd grade) but he asked to learn it, so we're going to try it ;)

Some kids are ready to read an write at 3, others not until 7 or 8, my son just wasn't ready at 5....

Being forced to do so much, he lost his interest in learning. This last week, I've seen that start coming back, which is good, shouldn't take him too long to bounce back into that curious little boy I used to know.
