I am still in the process of researching doing something different for our next school year and wanted to possibly change to a unit study approach. Both of my kids love science so I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for good science based unit studies. I am looking for something that I can use through the year and wrap all our studies around that. Any suggestions would be helpful.

    Thanks

Not sure if you're looking for a Christian perspective or not...but...

Rebecca Keller's series Real Science 4 Kids is set up that way. They even have "cogs" where you can connect language, etc. to them.

Considering God's Creation worked well for us across grades!

And conveniently enough, I have a Considering God's Creation Set AND an extra workbook for sale. LOL :)

If you do choose that, let me know, I'd LOVE for it to go to folks here :)

Sales pitch over, back to your regularly scheduled thread.

Already have it but thanks for the suggestion. I haven't used it yet and was saving it for next year. I guess I never thought of using it as a unit study. I haven't had time to look through it yet, but excited to do so.

Anyone have any other suggestions for a science, history or geography based unit study?

My kids were grades pre-K, 3rd and 5th when I started Considering God's Creation. We took almost two years to go through it. You can take your time and spend more time on the units the kids are more interested in.

Phillip was 3, and we planted flowers for my mom. Dad brought some fertilizer, and Phillip asked what it was. Dad said it was "plant food". Well, we had discussed photosynthesis when we did plants with CGC, so Phillip replied, "Oh, no, Grandpa, you don't understand! Plants make their own food from the sun!" Dad was SO surprised!

I haven't taken a good look at their unit studies yet but we are currently working on one fof their lapbooks http://www.homeschoolshare.com/levels.php Free stuff.

I got both unit studies we'll be using for summer (one science based, one literature based) here. They are on sale right now. I have looked at these and like them a lot.

This is the unit study we'll be using come fall, on farming.

    jascheres,

I cant remember how old your kids are, but have you thought of Project Wild? It is awesome, and a LOT of fun. Also extremely flexible in that you can bounce all over the book, scale back OR augment /stretch each lesson according to where you are, etc. Also, if you are on a "trip" you could include geocaching, (either hiding or seeking) and thereby incorporating geography. many of the activities lead to areas of community needs, leading to community service, project ideas, essays, speeches, and the list goes on.
If you are not familiar with Project Wild, you can read about it at their website:
    www.projectwild.org

In order to get the curriculum, you'll need to do one of two things: 1. attend a teacher training workshop (your state DNR will send someone to train homeschool moms if you can get about 8-10 together to commit.) I think it is about 3/4 of a day, and if I remember, it is free. OR 2. search for someone who has the books that is willing to give or sell them to you.

    Good Luck & have fun!
    Miller
