    Thinking about Abeka

We have used Abeka since my children has been homeschooling and this is our 9th year. My daughter who will be in 11th grade has used the Abeka Academy and loves it she does do the DVD and loves that also. My other daughter who will be going in 5th grade is using the 5th grade kit and we are looking forward to that. My kids have always enjoyed using Abeka. My oldest daughter would like to graduate down at the Academy as long as she finishes with them and I don't see why she would finish with them and also likes to attend Pennsacola College after high school. We have visited the College and it is wonderful. Hope you enjoy using Abeka if that is the way you will go.

One thing to remember, A Beka is a business and they want to make money. Nothing wrong with that, but don't give them any more than you need to. You certainly don't need accreditation--a heavy sounding word without much actual weight, even in high school. They have good solid materials and I have used some in the past and may continue to use some in the future, but there are other ways to learn some stuff without a "curriculum" per se.

At some point in time, I have been tempted by Abeka, Sonlight, My Father's World, Veritas, Classical Conversations and the do-it-yourself plan outlined in the book, The Well-Trained Mind. If you haven't had the opportunity to put your hands on any of these curriculums, I would strongly suggest you find a curriculum fair near you and do that. Besides, they're so much FUN!

I used Abeka for 1st and 2nd grade. It gave my daughter a firm foundation and me the courage to branch out...now I am quite eclectic! It is VERY workbooky, faster paced and and more advanced than many out of the box curr's.

If you use it go to www.homeschoolclassifieds.com, where they have a TON of Abeka for sale. I Wish you the best. Homeschooling is a blessing from God. He will equip you to teach your child.

The best advise you received was from a previous post on this thread.

Each and every one of us have an opinion about Abeka. The best thing you can do is go to one of their meetings and check it out for yourself. I think its AWESOME, others may not feel the same, check it out yourself.

I agree with all of the above. There is TONS of "set work" half way through the year me and my children were wore out!

There is also A LOT of books and papers to keep up with, at least in the older grades. It is also advanced more than a lot of cir. out there.

If you do find a display in your area, be careful, if you don't know much about HS it will draw you in. LOL!

I will have to say, it is a good way to start out. Just don't be a stickler about doing all the work, like I said, "there is a lot."
