You may want to skip this if ugly descriptions make you feel uneasy. Sorry. I am wondering if anyone has heard of this. Yesterday I could taste a little blood in my mouth and it seemed to be coming from the back of my throat. In the mirror I can see that the veins in the back of my mouth up by that hangy down thing and on my tonsils look very dark purple.It looked like some blood was on my tonsil. I don't know if the purple veins are something new or if they have always been this way and I just didn't notice because I don't usually look at the back of my throat with a flashlight. :lol: I looked to see where the blood came from. Maybe this is irritation from allergies. I had been cleaning out my husbands very dusty home office. I don't want to go to the doctor because it won't be covered by insurance. What do you think ? It looks less purple today than it did yesterday and there is no pain.
If there's blood involved, I would be seeing a doctor about it (but then we don't have the same insurance issues here - we're all covered by provincial medicare plans (PTL). Drink lots of fluids... maybe it was an irritant that caused all of that to happen.
Are you sure it is not coming from your gums? I have gingivitis and sometimes my gums bleed and taste blood. If it is coming from your tonsils or throat I would go see the dr soon. It doesn't sound like allergies (something I've suffered from since a child).
I am not a nurse or anything but if it were me, I would watch it for a few more days. If it looks worse or you continue to taste or see blood, then make an appointment. Or maybe you can try an "ask-a-nurse" hotline. Our insurance has one. Yours may also...anything they can do to keep you out of the doctor unnecessarily, I guess...but that's a whole other issue. lol.
I agree with Missy check your gums. That is common. Did you stratch the back of your throat with some kind of food. But, watch it and if it don't get better have it checked out.
My husband works for one of those nurse hotlines and is surrounded by them all day/week and they say "see a doctor". So, go see a doctor!
I agree with Jennie---it's not safe to let things go for too long! I certainly understand not wanting to go for cost reasons! But it's safer to get any infection or something like that taken care of before it can cause more problems! If it IS a minor thing----well, at least you know!

I saw the doctor today and he says the vein problem is caused from my chronic allergies - I think mostly post nasal drip. Also, acid reflux can also cause it, which I also have. My real concern in the back of my head was wondering if it could be from liver damage, which I've read can cause vericose veins in the mouth, because I take a prescription that can cause liver damage. The doctor felt my liver, and did not feel any distention and there is no tenderness. Also, if it were the liver, there would be jaundice, which I don't have. Thanks to all of you for praying. Sherry
What did he say about the bleeding? What was that? Glad it isn't something serious and that you had it checked it!!
He didn't seem to think the bleeding came from my throat. I have been having sinus problems so a possibility is it came down with post nasal drip or maybe it came from the gums. I'm not really concerned about that unless it happens again. He told me the medical term for the condition, I didn't write it down, but it's vericose veins in the mouth.He said my allergies and acid reflux caused it. I may call the doctor office sometime next week and ask the receptionist to look in my chart and tell me the medical term for the diagnosis. He seems to think I know medical terms because I was a medical assistant years ago.I promptly forgot much of what I learned while a medical assistant.I never tell doctors I use to be a medical assistant because they seem to enjoy talking in medical terminology if they think you know it and I just want to hear it in lay terms.For some goofy reason my husband tells them I use to work as a medical assistant. I guess the doctor hasn't noticed I look at him with a blank stare every time he talks to me using medical terminology. I do understand some of what he says but every so often he'll use a term and I'm clueless. I was feeling a bit like a zombie in there today. I am really not over the shock of my husband leaving. I was just relieved to hear my liver seems fine and the doctor doesn't think it is a symptom of anything serious. This doctor has been very good at diagnosing other members of our family. Sherry
Hello Kris, I am feeling better than when I first started this thread. I am still very stressed about the problems in my marriage but I do not feel as intensely upset as I did a couple of weeks ago. My husband is living in an apartment now. I found out there is an organization called DivorceCare for separated and divorced people that meets at a few churches within driving distance of where I live. I am thinking of visiting it soon. Sherry, you really should visit them! You don't have to go back if it's not "right" for you, but it could really help. It sometimes helps to know you're not the "only one". Good luck to you!
