I am looking for feedback from anyone who has used SWR. My dd11 is a horrid speller and handwriter. She can read, but does have moments of struggle which we believe are due to a delay in an eye muscle diagnosis. Now with corrective glasses she is doing more elective reading :)
At a recent conference, I attended a class about SWR and spent quite a bit of time at the booth getting questions answered. What dh and I like about it was that we could use it for all three kiddos. Our concern was the price - obviously - but when we looked at it being non consumable and multi-age, the price seemed more reasonable.
So, to reiterate, if anyone has used SWR, what are your thoughts?

I googled it. It sounds like it is based on the book I'm using, The Writing Road to Reading. I've found the method to be very good for both of my children. If you coud find The Writing Road to Reading by Romalda Bishop Spalding at your local library, it would be good to read. The entire philosophy and many pratical teaching ideas are laid out in the book. SWR has just taken those principles and laid them out into a easy to use curriculum. At the very least you'll get a complete picture of what SWR is trying to do and why, but at best, you'll decide that you can lay out your own curriculum with just the The Writing Road to Reading which only costs $16.31 at Amazon.

I bought SWR 2 yrs ago and it works! I LOVE the theory behind this program. It makes so much sense to me. My boys have really done well it and for us, it was a wise investment.

I used SWR this past year with my ds5. I was a little unsure of it at first because it is very "schoolish" and formal, which is not how we are in our family. It actually turned out to be great for my son and knowing the phonograms has really helped him to decode new words. It also helped tremendously with his writing, as I have to make sure he writes neatly and legibly in the Learning Log. Overall, it was great and I would recommend it to anyone. I believe SWR is the reason my son reads and spells well above his grade. I was hesitant to purchase it because of the cost, but since my son is only 5 I know he can use it for atleast the next few years and then we can use it for my ds3.

    Hope that helps

hmmm, I'll have to check this out also. I'm really wanting something to build up our spelling. Realized we needed to make this a focus when one of my kids wrote "4th uv July". :/

    Ouch!
But hey, before going and spending money on a curriculum, why dont you go through the dolch sight words with them and teach them how to spell everyword on them?

Do 3 a day, and test once a week. Their spelling may improve when they are made aware of precise spelling...

Still haven't bit the bullet yet, but SWR is still in the lead.
