I have 3 kids ages 5, 12 and 14 and I need some new ideas to get them all going. My oldest (dd age 14) has allergies and asthma so she doesn't like to be outdoors and complains that she's always tired (partly from the antihistimenes, partly from being a teen-LOL). We have a small living room so exercise videos don't work so well for us. We do go for walks but we live in a not-so-nice area and just our immediate block is 'OK'. Sorry to post so many negitives but you see what I'm up against ! Anybody got any ideas for me??? ~Tina
walks are fine... what about going once a week to a park that has a walking trail? Also, I decided that for us, learning about different sports also classified as PE
How about throw a ball back and fourth, either outside or in. Jump rope, basketball in the drive. Ride a bike, scooter. Do you have a local YMCA or community center...possably with a pool for swimming or playing basketball. Trampoline..hope I could help a bit for you anyway.
Can you afford a Wii? The Wii has TONS of exercise games --- many that have work-out modes --- that are great for people who are more-or-less confined to doing stuff indoors. We have a number of games besides the obvious Wii Fit that are games with work-out game play. For example, our Dance Dance Revolution has regular game play in it, but it also has an aerobic workout section that lets you set the number of calories you want to burn and keeps track of it for you. It's fun, doesn't require a lot of space, and gets you up and moving.
Some simple but thorough stretching and flexibility exercises don't take up much room. Maybe some with those "therapy bands" that provide varying degrees of resistance...
Would tae kwan do (or another martial art) be out of the question? Its something the three could do together and you might find that the dojo gives a family discount!
Our children participated in homeschool baseball, and there are also homeschool soccer teams in the area. Since practice and games are during school hours, there's never any problem finding a playing field. Also, our local YMCA used to offer PE classes for homeschooled students. Are these options for you?
We do martial arts, too, and I highly recommend it if it's an option. My husband and both kids participate in American Karate. It's excellent exercise and a great form of self-discipline.
Check out local colleges too. We have one that offers pe for homeschoolers. If you do not have one that offers that you could approach a the department head at a local college that offers pe teacher's training. Offering a class can be a great way for them to help their students and the community.
they have disney dance dance for play station 2 we have four pads my girls loved it to old for it now. Does anyone want to buy it from me. everything in great shape. Just pm me.
Ok small sapce-our cable has on demand yoga for kids - which they do in the living room. A small trampoline-they could jump on it while watching stuff on tv. Turn the radio or tv or whatever on and DANCE-just dance and dance and dance around your living room. For the Wii-if you're doing Wii fit you need the mat-which comes with the game. My kids really like this-I like that if they do the test everday they're on it, it keeps track on a little calendar. Lastly-I just make them do stuff like jumping jacks and stretches and kick their legs and swing their arms and stuff when they have to do pe inside. Head shoulders knees and toes at mach 10 is awesome, really hard, and they all end up giggling like crazy...but it "counts".
Have you looked for a local co-op that offers it as a weekly class? I have 3 near me that all offer PE. Walk around the local mall (no window shopping! LOL but it's indoors, a/c and heat, lots of people around here do it) Visit a local park weekly. Do you have enough room for a yoga or pilates (sp?) video? The don't require as much room as an aerobic video. How big is your kitchen? Big enough to use some masking tape for a game of 4 square indoors? This book is awesome. It has tons of ideas for PE games and activities (as well as some cool craft ideas) check to see if your library has it. Have them crank up the radio and dance around the house! Do it just for fun or dance as they do their chores. My kids have always loved this. And you really do get in a workout!
Thanks so much! Those are great ideas! We don't have a Wii but the kids are saving up. Dance Dance Revolution would be lots of fun as well as just jumping and stretching. I like all the ideas and it's totally motivated me! Just what I needed!
