Hi, new to this forum...from what i've seen, I really like it! I am in North West Missouri and was wondering if anybody on here is from my area? I am wanting to homeschool my boys again this year but last year put them back in ps last 3 months of school due to bad winter, they basically had cabin fever and was tired of not being able to do anything since the weather was so bad and wanted to meet friends. I am trying sooo hard to find people in my area and having a really hard time with it. Any suggestions on forming and meeting people to start a group? Thanks! :)

I'm sorry you're having a tough go of it right now. I'm not in your area, but feel the same difficulties at getting a group to stay together. Our group right now consists of my family and one other consistently, and then there are 1-2 other families that float in and out on a rare occasion.
I suggest googling 'homeschool group Missouri' and see what pops up. Also, try putting an ad in the local paper, or contact your library to see if there are any other HS-ers that come in... maybe you could use the library as a launching pad of sorts.
Hope you find something soon! I know how lonely it can be when you're on your own!

where in Missouri are you? I'm in Hannibal... they have a home educators group here but it's mostly people who have their kids enrolled in the christian school. i dont think they do much else.

go to your local library they usually know every homeschooler around. or google your area and if there's any groups or anything in area should come up.

Have you checked yahoo groups? That's not how I found any of my groups but they all have a yahoo group.

I agree check with your local library-mine was very helpful and homeschool friendly and pointed me to a group.

Also check with your local parks and rec dept.

Have you looked through HSLDA list of state groups?

Sometimes you can find local homeschoolers through national programs as well. Like I think it's Target that sponsors homeschool days (or maybe it's just free days-but if you take a school age child during school hours and see other school age children you can usually assume they are homeschooled as well) at children's museums nationwide. If she can find an event like this she might can ask those present if they homeschool and network that way.

Local parks, play grounds, nature center activities often contain a homeschooling family or two if you are willing to speak up that you homeschool (I know not everyone likes to volunteer that info in a group of strangers) you can network that way.

Goggle and find local church websites and check out their web page, some have homeschooling groups for church members. (some may welcome non members, some may not, but it may at least be a starting point for you to find other homeschoolers)

And you can check out general mom or children local groups as well. It won't be the same homeschooling based support for mom, but it can offer socialization and general support for mom. The other mom(s) might not be able to talk about curriculum choices with you but they can still talk discipline, laundry, and general interests.

Your local school board might or might not be helpful. The guy I turn my homeschooling paperwork into homeschools his daughter is why this comes to mind LOL but not all districts are so lucky as this. But it's worth a shot.

maybe there's a bookstore in your area that sells hs materials? they would definately know who the hs'ers are in your area! check bulletin boards at parks, stores that sell musical instruments or give lessons, and the library.
