Well I was at the library today and found one that I loved... Puss in Cowboy Boots by Jan & Phil Huling. It was so cute & was a great story.. It was a little long and advanced for my 4 year old though, but he was even finding himself interested in parts of it. Do any of you have any favorites... doesn't matter what age range they are intended for... I get all kinds for my little ones. But I think I get them for my enjoyment more than theirs. Suggest some favorites so I have a good list next time I go to the library!
One of my favorite children's books is The Little House. It might be too difficult for a 4 year old but you can do the reading together.
I LOVE The story about Ping, and Ferdinand. Actually I find that I really enjoyed all of the books that was on our reading list for FIAR. Check out www.fiarhq.com and check out the book lists. I don't think you'll find many books on there that you won't like. They are all great children's stories! My boys loved How to bake and apple pie and see the world.
I'm not sure Homeschool Spot has enough memory space for me to put my favorite story books. Here are just a few, some classics, some newbies.... The Pokey Puppy Me on a Map! Someplace Else The Cloudmakers 12 Hats for Lena Zin Zin Zin on a Violin Hickory Dickory Dock Around the Clock (extended beyond the norm) Going to Sleep on a Farm A Trip to the Zoo Pretty much the ENTIRE FIAR lists from Before FIAR to Beyond FIAR. Check homeschoolshare, they list them ALL. I can't think of one I don't like. And of course: Velveteen Rabbit (I defy you to read the Skin Horse's monologue without crying....I don't think it can be done by a human with heart!). That's it for now....I'll come up with more...
Boxcar Children 1-19 Little House books Ramona Books (or anything by Beverly Cleary) The Hobbit Frindle The Unicorn Hunt* Broken Sky Series* Bartimaeus Trilogy Dragons of Autumn Twilight, Dragons of Winter Night and Dragons of Spring Dawning Deltora Quest *Special Favorite These are some of the books I read as a young child and really enjoyed. I still enjoy them.
I'm with Gizzy! FRINDLE!!!! Of course, I was thinking picture books. Homeschool spot would need like 3 servers for my list of juvenile fiction!!!!!
I'm a definate Beatrix Potter fan. We have the whole collection thats been in the family for decades. lol Our oldest DS really likes the rhymes and that the animals are personified and I really like teh artwork. Also a fan of Old Fashioned Winnie the Pooh (again, mostly for the artwork, but I think the stories are really wholesome as well.) Speaking of wholesome stories with good morals: THOMAS THE TANK ENGINE books! Oldest DS loves THomas.
How about these, they were my kids favorites: Are you my mother? Caps for sale Mr. Brown can Moo! Can You? Robert Lopshire Put me in the zoo - Dr. Seuss plus most of the ones already listed Oh and I loved all, The Pokey little Puppy books!
Alfie books, which I learned of on here long ago. Alfie is SO pre-school!!! (By Shirley Hughes!) Winnie the Pooh and Beatrix Potter, OF COURSE! Pet Show by Ezra Jack Keats HANK THE COWDOG!!! Almost anything by Tomi de Paola The Mitten by Jan Brett
My kids are currently addicted to Pinkalicious Purplicious Chickens to the Rescue Pigs to the Rescue As well as a SLEW of books related to always loving kids no matter how much they misbehave. LOL We love all Eric Carle books, too!
So many from which to choose!!! I am trying to pick some that others have not too. Mr. Putter and Tabby series by Cynthia Ryland - sweet and very funny, about old people with old pets, not the typical talking animals, fantasy, or all about children type of book, helps children to appreciate elderly people. This one is definitely our favorite. Actually all of Cynthia Ryland's books are wonderful. Your son might like the Henry and Mudge series even more. Dick and Jane series - early sight readers that I found my daughter at four enjoying as much I did and they are in print again. Toys Go Out: Being the Adventures of a Knowledgeable Stingray, a Toughy Little Buffalo, and Someone Called Plastic by Emily Jenkins - a chapter book, longer but certainly one that would keep the interest of child at even four years old. This one was a surprise! It had my daughter and I both giggling so much she asked if she could keep reading it and she did read it all in one day--and then she began reading it again the next day! Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs by Judi Barrett - a lovely tall, tale done with an old fashion flair (thinking Paul Bunyan here) told by a grandfather but they change that part of the storyline when they made it into a movie (which I have not seen, but in the trailers there was an inventor, which was not in the book). Big Red Barn by Margaret Wise Brown - a sweet picture book for bedtime or anytime really. Little Golden Books - the old classics not the latter ones, love the old fashion art. Of these there is just too many to name really! The Kitten Who Thought He Was a Mouse by Miriam Norton and Garth Williams (my favorite from childhood) Good Night, Little Bear by Richard Scarry The Poky Little Puppy by Janette Sebring Lowrey and Gustaf Tenggren The Fuzzy Duckling by Jane Werner Watson, Alice Provensen, and Martin ProvensenThe Velveteen Rabbit (or How Toys Become Real) by Margery Williams - this one may be too much for a four year old, but still a very good story worth reading many times. Put Me In the Zoo by Robert Lopshire (Dr. Seuss series) - my all time favorite of the Seuss books...and yet he did not write it.
Thanks guys.. definitely gonna have a great list for the library next time. A lot of those I remember reading when I was young and had just completely forgotten about them!! I hadn't read a childrens book in years before my son was born but I am sooo into them now!! OOh and let me suggest all five of Uncle Arthur's Bedtime Story books. They are filled with amazing stories with good morals. I grew up on those!!
Some of our favorites: Caps for Sale And the Dish Ran Away With the Spoon (I think that's what it's called?) My Many Colored Days Hand Hand Fingers Thumb Three Billy Goats Gruff
