...in Teach Your Child to Read in Just Ten Minutes a Day? The author states several times how important it is to teach your child to read from left to right and not just assume that they know, but if I am understanding correctly, the games that you play are played from right to left on the board and you move the letters from right to left also. I don't understand this and it looks like this would confuse the poor child. Am I just missing something or can someone explain to me why they are played this way? I know I don't have to play them that way, but...
Sorry! I wish I had the book *sniff, sniff!* then I could offer an "insiders" advice. I would try and play the game the way that the book states a few times. First by yourself and then with your husband or another adult, then with your kids. I know from learning languages (Spanish, Arabic, and Japanese) that sometimes building words up from the back is GREAT to get the right pronunciation. Imagine your teaching someone the English word Tomorrow. Its easier to teach them by going... O Ro 'ah'-ro m'ah'-ro tu' m'ah' ro = tomorrow (I know my phonetics are off, but you get the idea.) That person will speak with EXCELLENT pronunciation once they get a hang for the speaking rythym of English. I know your teaching your kids to read in ENGLISH, but I just thought I'd share that bit of info with you. I dont mean to be snide, but if you just give the games a try you may find that you, as the teacher-parent, are just...hmm...OVER thinking some aspects. Just give it a try and criticize RESULTS (or lack there of) not the methods. Please keep me posted on how this works out for you as I'm eager to buy this book for myself to use with a very interactive 2yo.
I know, everyone tells me that I am "OVER thinking" it. And I am sure I am, don't know why, unless it is just that I am so nervous about teaching my youngest two. Oh, and I wasn't critizing methods or results, just trying to understand.
I can not remember the specific games you are talking about but used it for all 4 of my children and it worked very very well for all but one of them (he needed a very rules based regimented approach) the 3 who use TYCTR are excellent and very fluent readers. Try not to over think it to much and go with the flow. Best of luck!
