I thought that I had it all figured out to buy MOH vol 1 and Exploring Creation with Astronomy. But I read two things that worry me. First is the grade level of MOH I really really want to do it, but some suggest only using for 5th grade up. My ds will be doing mostly 2nd grade work. But there are also a bunch of people who use it and say it doesn't matter the kids do just fine. Ok so my second question is that somewhere I read that WTM suggests doing Anatomy when you study the ancients, and Astronomy when you study the Renaissance. Which I think might make sense. Do any of you all have input on that? Does it matter.
I haven't used any of these (yet) but I've heard it said that you can go through MOH a couple of times through the schooling years, and do more in-depth the second time around, so ... If it's working and interesting at 2nd grade level, then maybe do it again in more depth at junior high level? I can't imagine why anatomy with ancients and astronomy with Renaissence and not the other way around. Certainly ancient peoples studied the skies (the magi of Babylon???), and Renaissence artists if not doctors studied anatomy. So I don't see what difference it could possibly make to do which with what. Unless I'm really really missing something....
I don't have input about the science with the history part. I can however, tell you that I am doing MOH 1 with my boys and they are loving it! They are enjoying the stories (lesson) which are pretty short, and they love the activities and the timeline. We aren't doing the memory cards, but I have been doing the mapping exercises. Once you get the book in your hands you'll have to look and see which activities your child will like best, some may like the cards, but my boys prefer "fun" stuff. The love making the timeline figures!
Birbitt how are you doing the timeline? I just need to get the book and figure it out I am sure, but do I need to order anything to go with it for that?
I chose to do our timeline differently than the book because honestly the directions were kinda difficult to understand for making the timeline on the sewing board. So I got a roll of craft paper and had my dad cut it in half(through the roll), then we just make the figures from the pattern in the book and put it on the roll, roll it out to work on it, roll it back up when we're finished! The boys love it that way. The only thing you need for the timeline are notecards (a staple around here), either a folding sewing board or craft paper or a binder (some people on the MOH yahoo group use a binder for the timeline), markers/crayons, and scissors.
Ok well that makes my decision made for MOH. I am interested in the time line in a binder, we do not have wall space or much other space for that matter. I do have a roller for the craft paper I wonder if I could use that to make a time line that would roll up ? Thanks so much for your help and time, I don't know what I would do without the 'spot
No, you can use it all the way through high school. Rachael was in 7th when she did Vol. 2. We read it at home with Faythe and Phillip, but a group of young ladies also did it as a co-op once a week. Yes, you can easily use the roller paper.
7th grade will be fine, the books includes suggestions for digging deeper into topics for older children and it has three activities for each section, one for young students, middle students, and older students. Also there is a Craft Pack CD that is great for older children.
