I am sure this has been discussed before, but I am sure that I am not the only one that is wondering about this since there are so many new homescoolers this year. How much time do you allow for in each day for school? I have heard of some saying they were done is 2 hours time and I have heard some that take an entire day just like a school day. Myself, I am hoping for somewhere in the middle of that time line! lol This will be my first year homeschooling my son full time and my daughter full time. They are very different in age and do totally different curriculum. She is high school and as long as I have it planned out, as it mostly already is, she will go about her work on her own without direction. However my son, is 8 and going into 3rd grade. He is a VERY active boy. I know that teaching him at home is going to be difficult at first because he is not the craziest about the plan. I am working a full time job (Thank God from home) from 3:00 pm to 11:00 pm. So, our schooling needs to be done in time for work and we are not really early people as I am up late every night due to my work hours. So anyway, back to my original question and I will stop rambling on and on . . . how much time a day do you spend on school? Love in Christ, Cindy Mae
We are not morning people either. My idea is always to start around 9 and go till 12 and then break for lunch, with some snuggle/reading time after lunch. this almost always works. When it doesn't, well, I just say better luck next time! But we only do 4 subjects so it doesn't take very long. We spend more time on math than anything else. also, remember that if you have to break up the day or do a little on Saturday, that's ok too.
Last year we started around 9 and went till around noon on the must do subjects. Afternoons I worked on the computer (I teach online classes from home) and the kids would play computer games, or if it was nice hang at the park with other homeschooled kids. I tried to keep afternoons educational, but it didn't always happen. Edie
We do at least 4 hours a day, with a little extra after lunch if we can. Our state requires a certain number of hours total for the school year (not per day) so we need to maintain a relatively set schedule.
Well... I am pretty sure that we have never gone over 5 hours in a day and even coming close to that would have been on days where we were very involved in building something or busy making something in the kitchen. I don't understand what these people do who say that they spend 7 or 8 hours on school stuff, even doing 5-6 subjects a day we are done in 3 hours or less.
Hi the kids are still little DD, 5, and DS, 7, so at most 'formal' learning is only three hours usually afternoon. That gives them free time in the am to burn off energy before I ask them to focus on learning. I am thinking of starting in the fall with a scheduled gym time though so they can learn more games. I have one rule for homeschool that is ask questions and lots of them any time of the day or night. Although my son took it literally so we are trying phase out the night part lol. Therefore learning occurs anytime.
My boys are younger 5 and 7 and we spend about 2.5 -3.5 hours a day depending on what subjects we are doing and what projects we have. Also sometimes days go over if they are having a "dawdle" day.
We start around 9 or 9:30 and go until lunch time - around 11:30. They have an hour lunch break to eat and watch cartoons. Then, we conquer the rest of the subjects and end around 2:30. My son is very active as well. I've learned to let him stand up at his desk and hop around. His top half seems to remain stable and he's generally focused on the book at hand; it's just that his bottom half needs to be moving, so I let it. LOL
My state requires 4.5 hours a day-but we won't be doing 4.5 hours of book work for 1st grade though, I can tell you that! LOL Educational DVDs, PE, Home ec, life skills, nature walks, arts and crafts, etc will take up whatever time we have left over to meet our state requirements after the formal stuff is done... 4.5 hours seems like a long time to me for a 1st grader...
Back when we were homeschooling ds, we could finish a whole day's worth in about 4.5 hours - when he was focused! When he wasn't, it would take like a year to do that much!LOL (not really but it seemed like it).
well we tend to take alot of time off during nice weather, and then during the winter we do 6 or 8 hours a day, and we go 7 days a week. We don't do nearly that many hours on Sundays though, we go to church, but probably 3 or 4 hours on Sundays.
well when my girls were younger we were done in 3 to 4 hours. Now that they both are in high school thats a whole new road. It depends on what is going on in each class, any papers need to be written, any reports need to be done. So, some days are longer. How much reading is need in the subject and if they understand it or not, or if they need help in it and more practice. So, we really don't go by time we go by when the work is done we are done.
A good rule of thumb is 30 minutes per grade level... give or take. So, divide the grade level by half, and that'll tell you about how long school should take. A senior could easily spend 5-7 hours a day on calculus, physics, foreign language, etc., but a 2nd grader who's learning basic reading and math skills can be done in appx 1-2 hours. We're doing 2nd grade this year, 13 subjects (not all at once), and spending roughly 2 hours per day (not all at the same time). That's how much time we spend "doing school". Thankfully I'm in a state without time regulations. For ones that require 4+ hours, you could include home ec (making lunch, washing dishes), reading alone, playing outside (P.E.) and so on.
I don't know! ~lol~ I try to spend one hour reading aloud to my older son. Another hour of 1-on-1 time with him for math and other things I see that he needs my attention for. I spend another hour reading aloud to my younger son while my older son has "study time" and can study whatever he wants. So, that's at least 3 hours. I'd say 3-4 hours each day.
