Sorry yes it's like Flat Stanley, your child makes a character up. You then write the name and address on the back so if they are separated they will come back to you. And you should have them laminated although that is optional. You can send them out with a journal or a passport or the like. And after you find a 'host' family away they go. Usually they return after a few weeks accompanied by information on what they did with the host family. Also typically included are brochures and the like about the area they went to. That way it becomes a geography and social studies lesson. In return for this you agree to host the other families flat friend and do the same in kind. :)

Sorry, I still don't understand. What are you writing the name and address on the back of? What are you sending out and to whom? Sounds fun, I just don't get it! And what is a Flat Stanley?

We did for a while, but we rarely got ours back. We stopped because the boys were getting upset.

We've done it too. We sent out several in hopes that some would actually be returned. We did get a few back. A few decided they wanted to live with new families. :) It was fun. I'd LOVE to do some sort of traveling journal, but I'm so afraid we wouldn't get it back.

I never mind hosting flats, and I promise to return them. We live in an area that's great for hosting.

I'd enjoy hosting again, too. I'm not sure about sending one into the world, though. I'll have to think about it. Last time, the boys made three each (total of 9)... one came back once, but then took up permanent residence with it's second host. So, of the 9, we had one set of pics and such to show for it.

The boys really took it hard.

Oh, there is a Flat Traveler Homeschool group on Yahoo. It's specifically for trading Flats.

Didn't I host for you, Amie (a knight)? I'm pretty sure I returned him.

It is cool. And the yahoo group is great to find others to trade with. But there is the risk of not getting them back :( We didn't get to do it more then two times last season. Seems some people send them in the US to different States to learn about each one. We were just having fun identifying different places on the globe :)

I certainly trust you ladies more than the yahoo group people (only because I can come on here and pester repeatedly until you give in and return our flat. ha!)

Maybe we should start a HS Spot Flat swap. Lemme start a new thread.

In college for education, we did one in our Language Arts class and mine went to Iceland... That is the most exotic place I ever had mine go.

I just had one go to Calgary Alberta for the Stampede! He met cowboys, went on a boat ride and almost got eaten by a goat! Okay, my SIL is a great story teller! She should write children's books. Her 3 page letter was awesome!!! The kids really feel like their flat went on a real trip.
