So we had our very first day of "school" today, by just doing a few pages in a generic preschool book for my 3 year old, and some IXL.com math. HE Loved it!! Bo, enjoyed the workbook (even though he knew all of it) and did a craft and played with playdough! Lucky us, next we saw two grasshoppers on our glass door and looked at them for awhile, and talked about it, looked at it with our magnifying glass. He REALLY liked that (once he saw they weren't going to touch him, they were on the other side. lol) Paddy didn't do as well with what I had planned (which wasn't much, lemme tell ya). Informal Speech therapy today: we learned the word paint (he will only say it if I say it first, kinda like Echolalia) and mixed it with sensory. He wouldn't finger paint, he can't stand that, so I used a paint brush and he only pinched the very end of it to paint with. He did paint "Flat Stanley's" shirt though and I was very proud of him for sticking to it that long!!! (About 3 minutes ) Next we brought out the playdough, and chaos insued. He touched it once, and screamed/threw himself back to hit the chair w/ his head/ flapped/ gagged/ screamed some more. Not a good start, but it will get better!! I am very happy that he painted! He also played in the pool early this morning w/ his brother (Early, because it's now 107 outside ). Over all, a productive day, and I'm glad to begin with this! Thinking about breaking out some Dolch words for the oldest. I'm not expecting too much, but I just want to see where we can go.
Forgive my ignorance, but what is with the tantrum inducing playdoh? Also, is it possible you could put some really gooey playdough in a ziplock bag, tape the bag shut and put the bag in a cloth covering? Maybe he will like, and be able to cope with the squishyness of the dough if he doesn't have to see it is dough? Why does a a 1 year old need to know how to Say paint? I'm sorry if I'm being a silly goose, but what do you mean he learned to word paint and why did the playdough upset him so much? (Have you considered mudbaths/clay rubs for him?)
Patryk has a sensory disorder. He gets upset and overwhelmed when he has to touch certain things with odd textures. Most foods he doesn't like to touch, alot of textures, and it's hindering his motor development (example: he can't throw a ball b/c he can't stand to touch it.) His second birthday is coming up next month, and he has the speaking ability of a 6-9 month old. Alot of Echolalia. He has speech therapy once a week, and Occupational therapy for his sensory disorder once a month. Every day we have our own sensory therapy and we do things like play with play-doh, knead bread, play with rice, moon sand, water, whip cream, flour, and so on. It helps...build a tolerance, I suppose. The OT suggested a vibrating toothbrush for him too. It's not that he needs to know the word paint, it's just that we want him to start talking a little bit. If we explain everything that he's doing then maybe he'll pick up on it. I love the idea of the gooey stuff in a fabric bag! I'll have to get my fabric scraps and make one for him and get that set up! Thanks for the suggestion!!
