Has anyone used these with their junior or high schooler? Did your child like it? Why or why not? Was there another vocabulary book you liked?

I am deciding whether to use Word Roots B1 or Vocabulary from Classical Roots with my 9th grader son. Any help will be much appreciated.

Why not buy a dictionary instead and have him just read 1-2 pages a day. Just read each entry and make up an example sentence for each word if you can?

If you get a good dictionary it will have a list of common pre-/suf- fixes?

You can find a really nice list of roots/prefixes etc on the web for free if you just look a bit more.

Both my kids hated Vocabulary from Classical Roots. We used them for 4 years. They would get so ticked off because sometimes the definitions are too vague to pick the correct word due to the fact that all the words (or nearly all) in the list are related due to the root. I'd just like to add though, that I think it is a great vocabulary method. I liked it and their attitude obviously didn't deter me from using it for many years.

I also like Vocabulary from Classical Roots. I use it only as a supplement, but I like it.

I just purchased Vocab from Classical Roots (Book A) for my 7th grader. She uses Get A Clue for vocabulary (web-based program thru Homeschool Buyers Co-op) but I wanted to add a bit more (not that she needs it with GAC but I wanted to try it before high school...lol).

    So no real experience yet.

We are using Vocabulary from Classical Roots this year and so far so good. The teacher's guide has extra ideas to add to each lesson. I also add my own ideas so we can really get the most out of the curriculum.

Thank you all for your input. Seems like Vocabulary from Classical Roots is more popular. I was wondering about the teacher's guide and am glad to hear that it has extra ideas.

So many choices. If there was only one curriculum, we wouldn't have to give much thought of what to do each year but it sure would be less interesting :)

We love vocabulary books by Michael Clay Thompson from www.rfwp.com
We've done Caesar's English 1 and 2 and Word Within the Word 1. We'll be doing WWW2 this year. You'd probably start your 9th grader with WWW1

We're going to use Vocab from Classical Roots this year...I like the look of it and have had it recommended highly by many many of my friends. So we're giving it a whirl. I'm having both kids start with 4, but having my oldest do 4 and 5 this year - we're seeing how it goes - I want to ge ther "caught up" to her grade level with it.

My teen loved Vocab for Classical Roots and felt so much smarter for having used/studied it. I would recommend it highly. I'm holding on to my books for when my 6th grader gets to that level. Excellent.

I am using Vocabulary Vine and have found it very helpful. The boys even USED it the other day. Oh...like tele which means far away so that is far away (whatever) I can't remember the actual word but it was straight out of the lesson a week ago.
Also, she uses regular words. The only one we have had trouble with is phonograph...I was trying to describe/explain vinyl records to them. lol - like a cd only with grooves..?
