“Adventures in Geography”- A General Outline

In order to study the 7 continents in one year we are going on an adventure! The idea is to ‘travel’ around the world in one school year and see what we can find.

We will study each continent as well as how to read maps, topographical information and how it affects our trip as well as what it would be like to actually visit such places.
    In order to study and enjoy our trip we will use all or part of the following according to ages as well as learning styles and levels;
    - Standard Deviants YouTube, or Netflix videos on geographic areas
    - Library travel videos or other travel information from Library books.
    - Maps (I have some that I will give out that are older, but am working on finding new ones as well). Both in class time and at home.
    - A (fake) passport which we will stamp, or add a sticker or traced picture to provide proof of travel to said region.
    - Trail Guide to Geography ( reproducible pages or purchase your own copy on CBD.com)

I plan to use Trail Guide to World Geography as a ‘spine’ to follow as we travel. We will spend one month in each continent / geographical region. Each month I will provide the students with a Travel Packet.
Each Packet will include all or some of the following:
-A map of required region to study.
-Daily Drill questions at appropriate levels of learning for each child.
    -Brochures for the month’s locations.
-A list of requirements as well as the desired result for each student that month.
-Web site addresses to follow and or programs, videos etc to watch to learn more about it.
-Suggested Field trips to areas similar or related to our locations of study.
-As many fun pages as I have found for that location to encourage enjoyment and learning at the same time.
    - Any possible suggested art or craft ideas for the area we are studying. (ie: Mexico would be either weaving baskets, pottery, or other local artifacts, Aztec studies will include creating a small model of an artifact, Africa a mask, etc.)

Possible Country Outline for Report included in packet each month.
For each country we visit the students will be required to provide the following information.

Population as of most recently recorded information.
What is/are the most commonly spoken language(s)
Prepare a sample of food(s) for your country.
    Major Imports
    Major Exports
Religions; What are the predominant religions of said country?
Missionary information; any info you can find on or from a mission work going on in your country.
Tourism Draws: what would cause you to want to go to this country as a tourist?
    Note any historically significant facts.
What type of topography is in this country?
Is it a poor or rich country?
What is the most common job?
Draw a picture or show a photo,, print- cut paste etc, of what the people look like and what they wear.
Fill out a map including details at student’s learning level; water mass, mountainous regions, major cities, ports of interest etc.

Each month in class we will go over both what we have learned and each student will have a chance to share one or more country foods or stories of their learning adventures ‘in’ their country.
I plan to go over maps each class and see what areas we are traveling to, to discuss how we would get there, is there a local air port? Would we have to use land travel? How would we make it to our place of interest? What would we find once we got there? Are there hotels like San Francisco has? Are there old broken down mud buildings to stay in or do we need to bring a tent and sleeping bag in order to have a place to stay. Do we need bug repellant?
Questions like these will be discussed in class to spike the student’s interests in the different areas.

Each family will be required to provide one food product during their studies (this can be each month or only once per family depending on the desires of the students and what countries we study).

I hope I have not overwhelmed you with this information it sounds like a lot but once organized into packets it is really a fun study!
    Be blessed,
    TW

I am so excited now I picked up some maps from AAA and some brochures to bring to class tomorrow.
I have my links page ,just going to add hsgt to that and they will hve a month of study stuff!
We are doing half hour of MAPS and how to read them, and globe too, then half hour of video with lesson to go with that... and then half hour of NA what we are going to do with that.
Then class is over whew! I will have dd come along as she has no friday classes, and she will take photos and such for our first 'stuff for your web site' information of where we will go, and topography stuff.. links I am gathering too.
Is this going to work out okay with your stuff too?
