Does anyone know were i can find out what reading level dd is at, because im thinking maybe i am not giving her enough credit thank you x
A simple and possibly expensive way of finding out would be to take them a tutoring center and pay for an assessment. I myself and looking hard to try and figure out how I can do the same thing for 6yo. Maybe you can ask around at the library and or schools. You dont have to tell them you HS, a school might be unhelpful on purpose if they know you HS or plan to continue HS, but I'd contact a school and ask about what are your options for having your kid tested. Thats what I'm thinking of doing for 6yo. I really feel he's more of on a 2nd grade level, but I dont want to be over hyping the poor kid, but I think he really will be upset with and bored with first grade, especially in the beginning!
I've bene googling Reading Assessment tests this morning, I'm still looking through the results. I think I'm going to give 6yo 3 of them and then average his test score... I dont have anything to recommend, but I wanted to suggest maybe everyone interested do the same and we can discuss the best and worst tests a little later...
I LOOOOOOVE www.letsgolearn.com for figuring out reading and math levels! I can't say enough about it. It's really fun (a cartoon monkey tells your child what to do). It's kid-friendly, and it adapts to the user so that all questions start easy and get harder until they start messing up. Your score report is broken down in sections like phonics, comprehension, spelling, etc. I WISH I'd done this before we began. It's $20 per test, but if you go through homeschool buyer's co-op (free to join), it's only $15 for the test. It will also compare the score to you state's standards.
You can use the Mindplay Reading Assessment. It is online and free. It probably isn't the best test out there, but it can give you an idea where she is. It looks at phonics and reading comprehension. http://www.test4free.com/assessfam.asp
I second this I am going to use this for my 2 dd's this year. Once next week and then at the end of the year to see our progress. They also have a math assesment that we are going to use as well.
There are different types of reading test. It is early I don't know if I can remember them all like comprehension, speed, fluency, and grade level. Here are couple of links that helped me. http://www.prel.org/products/re_/assessing-fluency.htm http://www.learningabledkids.com/reading/reading_tests_free.htm http://www.time4learning.com/readingpyramid/fluency.htm One thing that I like to do is look a book up on the scholastic book finder website, and then see what it is leveled at. I have my ds read the book and I can judge where he is reading comfortable with few missed words etc by that as well. Here is the link Just type the title in the search bar. http://bookwizard.scholastic.com/tbw/viewWorkDetail.do?workId=1147
