As some of you know i am completely new to this we started on Monday. I have to say I had no curriculum. I have used lots of free resources and I am so impressed at what i have found for free(lots of thanks to Sonita). So I am wondering if this is acceptable to use with the board of education. So far we have been able to finish school by noon, it has been very peaceful and I am really loving it.
Yes, it's possible to homeschool for free (other than supplies). Yes, it's ok to finish at noon. Yes, this is (usually) acceptable to the board (if they're fair and not looking for ways to "gotcha" on every point)... as long as your child is learning what the state says they have to learn, the state can't mandate what you use to teach it.

Totally acceptable! It takes less planning to buy a pre-packaged curriculum (if you're planning to cover certain points over the course of a year) but totally doable and acceptable to use free resources from different place to cover the topics your state or you deem necessary. I use curriculum for science (and it supplement heavily too-I have a science geek on my hands ). everything else I grab and go based on my child's interests from here or there and mostly for free... I'm teaching the required state subjects, he's learning things, progressing fine...It doesn't matter how or what you use to learn-so much as you learn.
Totally and completely acceptable! I used free curriculum for K-2 and then I only bought stuff because my kids really seemed interested...and it was used so it wasn't that much money. I also didn't buy every subject...I still used quite a bit of free stuff.
The Lord laid it on my heart to start a community where homeschoolers can get free curriculum, just paying the cost of shipping. It was launched 7-23 and we have over 1,100 members. I have even gotten a few things, but have been able to bless others with stuff as well...which I think I like better! I know some families have gotten really expensive stuff too! There is no catch and it is free to join! www.curriculumshare.com
I purchased curriculum this year, because its my first year, and I felt it would just be easier and more structured that way. But I have seen a lot of great free things online, and I also saw a book at the library about homeschooling for free, or almost free.
No, I don't think it is possible to homeschool for free. Even if you don't buy curriculum it costs money to have an internet connection, to take extra trips to the library, to print pages, to go to the zoo, etc. You can do quite a bit without purchasing curriculum and homeschool for low costs, but I don't think it is possible to homeschool for free. I do think you can spend less than you would on supplies, field trips, and clothes needed for public school though.
